Today we celebrate @vandanashiva1 — scientist, environmental activist and founder of @navdanyaindofficial — on her birthday.

For over five decades, Vandana has been fighting for environmental justice, seed freedom and ecological agriculture. Growing up in the forests of the Indian Himalayas, she learned early on that humans are not separate from nature, but part of it. “We are just one species amongst millions,” she reminds us.

Perhaps that is the biggest shift she is calling for: to see ourselves not as masters of nature, but as part of it — and to give back to the Earth that sustains us.

Read our interview with Vandana on @wearethe_regeneration (link in bio).

And if her work resonates, share her story in celebration!

What if we could prevent disease by transforming the way we grow and eat our food?

On 19-20 November, the European Food is Medicine & Agri-Health Summit in Amsterdam will explore how agriculture and healthcare can come together to build a healthier future.

Every year, more than €700 billion is spent treating preventable diseases across the EU. “That’s nearly 80 percent of all healthcare spending”, says Zuzanna Zielińska, co-founder of @harvestcare_eu

Together with Anne van de Peppel, she runs Food is Medicine trials in Rotterdam to demonstrate how restoring soil and human health can go hand in hand. They're also developing an Agri-Health System: a framework that connects agriculture, healthcare, research and finance around prevention.

Want to know more? Join the European Food is Medicine & Agri-Health Summit on 19–20 November at @tolhuistuin in Amsterdam & read the full story about @harvestcare_eu on @wearethe_regeneration (link in bio).

The boreal forests account for 27 percent of the world’s total forest cover and are known as the second lung of the world.

"They are almost as vital as the Amazon rainforest", says Lilian Bosch, co-founder of WILD Sápmi. "And yet, they are disappearing at an alarming rate."

"The real solution lies in strengthening the Sámi", says Lilian. "Their way of life is what keeps the boreal forests healthy — they have lived with their reindeer in the boreal forests since the Ice Age and have completely evolved together."

For Chilean Mapuche healer Carola Esparza, change begins with recognising that we're not separate from nature, but part of something much bigger.

“In Mapuche spirituality, everything is connected. For me, this is also why we say: ‘We are all related.’ You are my brother, you are my sister.”

“I believe the mind and the heart have to come together. There's nothing wrong with technology or science. The mind is a wonderful thing, but it is not enough on its own. And neither is spirituality. We need both.”

“We're here to experience this world, to learn from it, to be grateful for it, and to leave it even more beautiful than it already is.”

From the Meuse to the Danube, ecologist Li An Phoa walks hundreds of kilometres along rivers every year.

"Everything we do on land is reflected in rivers", Li An says. "If we stop the pollution, the river’s self-healing capacity returns. We just have to give her a chance.”

Through @drinkablerivers , she’s building a global movement – bringing people together within the same catchment, united by one simple, radical goal: rivers we can drink from again.

A walnut, a seed pod, a handful of beans. Through the eyes of Swiss artist and ecologist @j.d.frei , the seemingly ordinary becomes extraordinary.

A few years ago, Jonas began photographing carefully arranged compositions of things so commonplace that most of us barely notice them anymore – the plants growing beside pavements, the walnuts we eat, the seeds hidden inside familiar fruits.

“Most of them are really well known, but many people don’t know about their diversity,” he says, “or simply haven’t paid enough attention to see it. It helps to put them on a white background – like art – and then look at them again.”

“I could have posted political statements about biodiversity loss with every botanical photo I’ve ever shared,” he says. “Instead, I might post an image of different varieties of corn, accompanied by a scientific description. It gives everyone the possibility to admire it. And hopefully, it connects people who aren’t already in this bubble with the idea of diversity being a positive thing.”

Brazil’s Cerrado is often seen as the dry backdrop to the Amazon rainforest. But this vast savannah is a crucial store of water – and an ecosystem the rainforest itself depends on.

Known locally as the berço das águas – the cradle of waters – the Cerrado is connected to the Amazon through a remarkable cycle of water known as ‘flying rivers’. These carry enormous amounts of water vapour through the atmosphere, which falls as rain over the Cerrado before flowing back towards the Amazon through rivers and groundwater.

In this way, the two ecosystems sustain one another. If the Cerrado disappears, the Amazon will wither too.

Journalist @keesfoekema travelled deep into the Cerrado to explore this extraordinary but often overlooked landscape – and returned with some valuable insights.

What does it take to transform 3,000 hectares of farmland and forest into a thriving ecosystem?

Just outside Berlin, regenerative farming pioneer @benediktboesel is trying to find out. At @gutundboesel , 350 cattle graze outdoors year-round and 10 different forms of agroforestry are being tested.
