Matthew Walton is an emerging artist based in Toronto. His mixed-media practice combines drawing and painting, often merging the human form with a distinct graphic sensibility. The result is figurative compositions that strike a vibrating textural contrast between softness and hardness.

Walton’s work highlights everyday queerness, and transforms these moments through his bold, graphic approach to figuration and vibrant technicolor lens. More specifically, Matthew’s works that will be exhibited at @art_toronto starting tonight, delve into the gay dancefloor, allowing his camp and cubist codes figure to live uninhibited. Here gestures and mannerisms once repressed are embraced - a celebration of authentic self-expression.

See Matthew’s works at booth 323 at Art Toronto from Oct 29 - Nov 1 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (255 Front St, Toronto, ON).

Steven Schmid is a Bahamian interdisciplinary artist who uses painting, collage and assemblage on handmade paper to explore themes of intersectionality, social and material hierarchies and Bahamian-ness.

Schmid’s recent body of work titled “Like Bodies” explores abstract figuration to imagine more expansive representations of the Bahamian body. Using the siphonophore, an aquatic colony comprising of singular, specialized, jellyfish like animals that work together to form one large superorganism, Schmid creates work that envisions more nuanced depictions of community and family.

Miakoda (Mia) Ohki is a Métis-Japanese Canadian (Métis-Nikkei) artist from St Albert, Alberta. Currently based in Ottawa, her practice explores mixed identity, cultural inheritance, and seeks to contribute to her communities through authentic representations of tradition and honest depictions of her lived experience.

In her FEELMO series that will be launched from Oct 29-Nov 1 at @art_toronto, Ohki turns contemplation into object, giving form to private thoughts. The ongoing goal of the project is to create 420 sculptures in order to validate the overwhelming internal world many of us endure. In investigating this physical archive of an internal experience that normally leaves no visible trace, Ohki aims to bond us as humans in shared experience.

In the first of our @art_toronto exhibiting artist spotlights, we’re featuring Kellen Hatanaka!

Born in Toronto, now living and working in Stratford, Ontario, Kellen’s multidisciplinary practice involves making vibrant work that contemplates sport, masculinity, history, culture, design, and what it means to be a father. His works often delves deeper into Japanese-Canadian history and the overarching experience of the community, as well as what it means to be a man of East Asian descent growing up and living in North America.

Intercalations is in its last couple of days!!

We’re open today from 11am to 6pm and tomorrow/Saturday from 11am–5pm at 20 Maud St, Unit B3, Toronto.

Before the exhibition winds down, I’d like to share a bit about how this project came about.

For the past several years, my practice has explored how human actions can erode, corrupt, and transform memories. Through wax, detritus, fire, and digital manipulation, I approach remembrance as a way to alter what remains and open up new relationships with histories beyond our immediate reach.

In 2024, @redheadgallery, the artist collective of which I’m a member, was invited to exhibit in Buenos Aires around the theme of “bridging borders.” The invitation coincided with my first experiments using Adobe’s Firefly AI plugin and got me thinking about bridges, both literal and metaphorical.

I brought photographs of Toronto’s harbourfront and the harbour in Beihai together, using AI to stitch these different bodies of water into a seemingly continuous scene. In bridging the images, I was also imagining a bridge between their histories. This became Waters, the first piece in the series, and the beginning of an inquiry into AI’s impact on memory-making and archival histories.

Alongside installation shots of Intercalations, I’ve included some behind-the-scenes documentation: testing Waters with a manual bevel cutter, holding an early version of Dine with a front-facing bevel, and the source images that came together in Salon. by @wearethenewotherto

Final week to catch Intercalations! It’s been wonderful sharing this body of work with you all. Thank you to everyone who’s come by and for all the meaningful conversations. Would love to see more of you before the show wraps up!

We’re open today through Saturday. (Hours: Wed–Fri 11am–6pm, Sat 11am–5pm).

20 Maud St, Unit B3, Toronto, ON. (If the building doors are locked, please find “The New Other” on the buzzer to be let in.) by @wearethenewotherto

At its core, the work in Geoffrey Lok-Fay Cheung’s solo exhibition, Intercalations, seeks to give voice to the unknown. The Keremeos series draws on archival images provided by the South Similkameen Museum during Geoffrey’s time at the @similkameenartistresidency. They feature people and objects whose contexts have been lost or forgotten. Yet these figures had histories and relationships; they mattered to those around them—enough to have been photographed. Once Known features an image of an unidentified Chinese man pictured with a carefully shaped oval mat, suggesting that he was once valued and cared for. AI imagines him as someone known and adored, surrounded by a crowd of white men who look upon him with longing. This is an improbable and cynical reversal of historical power relations. Yet might this improbability suggest a possible roadmap towards a more understanding and welcoming future?

Don’t forget to join us Saturday, October 17th at B3-20 Maud St from 1-2pm for an insightful artist talk with Geoffrey Lok-Fay Cheung.

Featuring artwork by Kellen Hatanaka, Mia Ohki, Steven Schmid, and Matthew Walton, the exhibition delves into the nuance of living as a person of mixed-heritage, away from “home,” and navigating as a person both inside and out of the mainstream.

Art Toronto runs Thursday, October 29th to Sunday, November 1st at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (255 Front St W).
