Training Theory Put Into Practice 4️⃣ Grappling PT. 5️⃣ 🤼‍♂️🥋

Strength training alone won't help you improve in your sport technique wise

But it sure can help you get out of sticky situations.

General strength will help get you through difficult positions a lot better than if you were weak (that's on and off the mat)

And the reality is you can never be "too strong" for grappling but once you're strong enough, that's when you need to learn how to use said strength and know when to apply it efficiently at any given moment

That's where other performance attributes come into play (power, endurance, flexibility, etc)

I hope this helps 💪🏾🙏🏾

WIN-SEASON 🤼‍♂️ | Your 🇩🇴🥉Medalist in Greco-Roman Wrestling (HIGHLIGHTS)
-
XX Campeonato Nacional de Lucha Copa Navideña
-

First time competing in 2 years and the first time ever competing in Greco-Roman wrestling.

It wasn't easy, it definitely wasn't pretty, but wrestling is anything but.

Despite medical setbacks, I found the strength, the courage and the will to keep the passion to become the best wrestler I can be.

We still have ways to go but as long as one foot is in front of the other, we'll keep pushing towards the destination.

It sure does feel good getting your hand raised 🙋🏾‍♂️💪🏾

WRESTLING STRENGTH | Functional Single-Leg Strength & Power Training for Wrestlers/Grapplers
--
Great way to start the week with a solid lower body strength and power training session.

More on the functional side than the brute traditional with this one but that's okay.

Wrestling (especially Greco-Roman) allows such freedom of movement expression and it's ways to develop them.

With that said, this session aims at challenging and strengthening the hips, knees, ankles, and feet in order to maximize movement expression and power on the mats.

Here's how we did it:

Power Primer
-
1. Single Leg Sled Pushes
2. RFE Single Leg Drop-Catches (front loaded)
3. RFE Single Leg Knee Tucks
4. Low Box Lateral Side Shuffles (front loaded)
5. Weighted Single Leg Lateral Pogo Bounds

Main Work
-
1. Spring Ankle Overcoming ISO –› LM Split Squat Drop Reverse Lunges (floating heel)

2. Twisting Lateral Squat –› Box Cossack Squat Shuffles

3. Heavy Band Paloff Lateral Shuffles –› MB Leg Raises (on dip bar)

4 Different Foot Position Calf Raise ISO (on machine) (NOT SHOWN)

I hope this helps!

WRESTLING STRENGTH | Greco-Style Single Leg Strength & Power Training for Wrestlers/Grapplers 👨🏾‍🫯‍👨🏼🥋

This session involved more single-leg strength and power training, aimed at getting the mind comfortable obtaining strength and resiliency in certain positions before expressing those positions powerfully.

It also included more movements done with the heel elevated to strengthen the feet and ankles.
Since Greco is about pushing and maintaining your ground, the feet and ankle complex must be equipped to absorb and redirect force throughout the match.

However, the style of grappling shouldn't matter in this regard: all wrestlers and grapplers need a strong, resilient, and powerful lower body to express their maximum capabilities on the mat.

WRESTLING STRENGTH | Greco-Style Single Leg Strength & Power Training for Wrestlers/Grapplers

The only critique I have about this session was that I ran out of time.

Overall, for what it's worth, a pretty solid single leg session.

Focused on strengthening mind-body connectivity to strengthen positions and ranges of motion on the wrestling mat.

Hence a single leg variation to this "leg day".

P1. Banded Single Leg Pulls
P2. Slam Ball Suplex Wall Throws

1. Slow Ecc. Front Loaded Reverse Lunge (Front Squat to reset)
2. 'Straight' Legged Hip Thrust (3 sec pause @ top)

3a. Weighted Copenhagen Isos
3b. Star Fish Side Plank
3c. Lateral Sled Pushes
4d. [story exclusive] V-Ups w/medball x 20

WRESTLING STRENGTH | Bodyweight Pulling Strength For Wrestling/Grappling 🤼🥋

I overheard a Central American Silver Medalist talking to a wrestler that asked him what his workout routine was to get as big as him.

He goes on to say that all he does is high rep bodyweight training circuit training and band work; you won't find him at a gym squatting or benching 315 lbs for reps.

Mind you, he just won a silver medal in Greco Roman wrestling, so his words have merit to this point and

Despite being the avid gym enthusiast that I am, I couldn't help but agree with his stance on strength training for wrestling.

Now there's many ways to get strong and in shape for the sport but his message seemed clear: master your own bodyweight and learn how to endure if you want to succeed on the mat.

So, here are a few bodyweight movements to help increase pulling strength and capacity so you can dominate the handfight and win more matches
