“Wired” I’ve never been the digital art guy but I think I made a digital artwork for the one time. #art #procreate #artist #illustration by @wingbrah_
My entry for the @nhmu billboard competition. My acrylic painting of the Utahceratops, created on 18 x 48-inch recycled, stained plywood, explores the intersection of Utah’s natural history and my own personal connection to the state. Growing up in Utah, I was fascinated by dinosaurs, particularly Triceratops. I selected the Utahceratops for its relationship to this familiar dinosaur family and significance to Utah’s prehistoric landscape, allowing me to celebrate both a childhood interest and the state's unique paleontological heritage. The composition features a complete juvenile skeleton alongside an adult skull, a pairing inspired by my childhood visits to the Utah Natural History Museum with my grandmother. By juxtaposing these ages, I sought to connect the scientific significance of the subject with the personal memories that first fostered my appreciation for natural history. I incorporated the natural grain of the reclaimed plywood into the depiction of bone, using its organic texture to evoke fossilization and the passage of geological time. An earth-toned palette complements the museum’s visual identity while reinforcing the painting’s connection to the natural environment. The work developed over nearly a month of research, reference gathering, sketching, and painting. Using photographs and videos I captured of the Utahceratops displayed in the museum, I aimed to maintain anatomical accuracy while simplifying forms for immediate recognition. Because the painting was designed for billboard display, I prioritized visual clarity and strong compositional hierarchy, ensuring the subject could be understood quickly and from a distance. Ultimately, the piece brings together personal memory, Utah’s prehistoric heritage, and purposeful visual communication to celebrate the museum’s role in connecting people with the natural world. -Corbin Stewart by @wingbrah_
