***CW: Violence against Indigenous Women and Girls & 2SLBGTQQIA+***

October 4 marks the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Gender Diverse people.

We stand in solidarity with the families and loved ones of those who were murdered or have gone missing. We join those who have been impacted by the ongoing violence against Indigenous women, girls and gender-diverse people in demanding action.

We cannot imagine the deep pain, grief, and unthinkable loss felt by those who have survived, and lost their loved ones to, the rampant and senseless violence.

It is egregious that more than three years later, most of the 231 Calls for Justice put forward by the National Inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls have yet to be implemented. The Calls for Justice were targeted toward both federal and provincial/territorial governments, as well as the public, the media, service providers, and more.

This crisis is a national emergency and should be acted upon as such. The ongoing murders and disappearances prove what we know to be true: not enough has been done. The report called for “transformative legal and social changes” to resolve this ongoing crisis, yet perpetrators continue to act with impunity.

As the report states: “We demand a world within which First Nations, Inuit, and Métis families can raise their children with the same safety, security, and human rights that non-Indigenous families do, along with full respect for the Indigenous and human rights of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis families.”

We demand action and ask uninvited settlers to do the same. Write a letter to your elected representatives asking them to commit to the 231 Calls for Justice in the National Inquiry into MMIWG Final Report. by @wishdropin

CW: content about residential schools, colonial violence

Today we mourn and honour the Indigenous lives that were stolen by the "Canadian" government through the residential "school" system. We stand in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples, with the survivors of residential “schools,” and everyone who has been affected by them. Colonization continues to cause harm, and its legacy impacts every social system, including community services like WISH.

Today we recommit to learn, unlearn, and do better.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) has gutted its Sex Work Enforcement Guidelines and, without consultation, erased the input of community organizations that shaped the original policy. Our organizations were not notified of the updated guidelines, which remove key procedures for responding when sex workers report crimes. The document also places a greater emphasis on exploitation and trafficking, signaling a move away from prioritizing sex workers’ health, safety, and rights.

Text through three pages describes how the Vancouver Police Department has gutted its Sex Work Enforcement Guidelines, without consultation or notice to community organizations. They remove key procedures for how officers should respond when sex workers report crimes, and place a greater emphasis on exploitation and trafficking, showing a shift from prioritizing health, safety, and rights. Spokespeople are quoted, outlining how this impacts their communities. End image description] by @wishdropin

Earlier this summer, our organizations noticed that the Vancouver Police Department published updated Sex Work Enforcement Guidelines on its website.

We were not notified that the guidelines would be changed or given any opportunity to provide input.

Vancouver police made a deliberate decision to exclude sex worker voices from this process, and the result is a document that’s rewritten to remove accountability and key safeguards, while shifting away from prioritizing sex workers’ rights, health and safety.

[image descriptions: Text-only slides. Black and red text with white background and ring image in top left corner. 1. Title: Vancouver Police Gutted the Sex Work Enforcement Guidelines. Example text shows deleted line. Body text explains no notice was given. 2. Title: Background – Decades of failing to protect sex workers led to the guidelines. Body text explains original document was an attempt to change police practices and enforcement that allowed a serial killer to murder dozens of Indigenous and sex working women in the Downtown Eastside. 3. Title: Deleted: basic understandings and approaches, overall softening of language. Examples listed below. 4. Title: Failures of VPD Liaison Officer. Frontline organizations point to failings including ignoring calls for weeks and years – the same horrendous behaviour that allowed a serial killer to prey on women in the Downtown Eastside. 5. Title: Deleted: References to the Downtown Eastside. Body text explains how original document named unique marginalization and vulnerability of DTES sex workers. It says cutting these references and minimizing impacts of colonization related to Indigenous sex workers contributes to further overpolicing and under-protecting. 6. Title: Emphasis on Exploitation. Body text notes conflating of sex work with trafficking and how reports of assaults and robberies victimizing sex workers are often ignored. Instead, police try to investigate trafficking looking for pimps and traffickers that don’t exist. by @wishdropin
