WHOSE EYES CAN I TRUST ?
Through sequencing, repetition of space, memory, duration, and the delay of time, I explore the relationship between a mentor and his mentees in a college town in the American South.
The portraits of students and professors reflect a photographic tradition passed from one generation to the next. Layered and collaged, the images evoke the lingering presence of Walker Evans, the master of documentary style, and the emotional echo of his influence.

Excerpts from my documentary WOMAN WITH CLAWS- The peculiar photographs of Paul Outerbridge. Meet one of the early masters of color photography. The film was shot in a photo studio in San Diego. We created props and studio sets inspired by Outerbridge's original photographs from the early 1930's. The film will be shown as part of a screening at Digital Gym Cinema on July 16 at 7pm. #paulouterbridge #digitalgymsd #mediaartssd #mediumsandiego #fineartphotography #documentaryfilm #jamesbidgood by @wolfganghastert

📸 Medium Photo @mediumsandiego returns to Digital Gym Cinema on Thursday, July 16 at 7:00 PM with "Camp, Color, and Queer Vision", a special double feature celebrating two visionary artists who expanded the possibilities of photography through color, fantasy, and personal expression. 🎟️ Tickets are available now at the 🔗🔝 or get them in person at our box office, while they last! A perfect lead-in to San Diego Pride weekend and a rare opportunity to experience two fascinating stories from photographic history on the big screen.

The evening begins with WOMAN WITH CLAWS: The Peculiar Photographs of Paul Outerbridge, a documentary exploring the life and work of the pioneering color photographer whose innovative techniques and provocative imagery challenged artistic conventions of his era.

The program continues with THE QUEER REVERIES OF JAMES BIDGOOD, a vibrant portrait of the artist behind the cult classic Pink Narcissus. Featuring rare footage and interviews, the film explores Bidgood’s enduring influence on photography, filmmaking, and queer visual culture.

Filmmaker @wolfganghastert will be in attendance alongside collaborators Paul Jennings and Larry Ashton for a post-screening conversation about the films, photography, and the creative worlds of Outerbridge and Bidgood. by @wolfganghastert
