Last week we came together to launch the new year with intention, connection, and heart. From curated swag bags to meditation, yoga, and sound bowls, we created space to slow down, reset, and truly align. We vision boarded while building our own charcuterie boards, reflected through letters to our future selves, and read notes written by past versions of us who once dreamed of being exactly here.

✨ I hate the word “assistant” — you are so much more than that.
This industry has come a long way, but we’ve still got work to do when it comes to how we treat new talent.

Let’s clear this up once and for all 👇🏼
There are only two legal structures when it comes to working in a salon:

Chair/Booth Rental (1099)
– You’re self-employed
– You pay your own taxes
– You set your own schedule
– You supply your own products
– You run your own business inside someone else’s building

Commission (W-2)
– You’re an employee
– Taxes are withheld
– You’re given products, backbar, schedules, and policies
– AND legally, you must be paid at least minimum wage if commission isn’t met (aka hourly guarantee)

⚠️ Commission + 1099 = ILLEGAL
If you’re being paid commission but taxed as a 1099, your rights are being violated—and the salon is at risk, too.

Let’s talk pay
Commission salon? That’s us.
W-2 employee? Us too!
At Blush & Bone, you get both; not only because it’s legal but because we treat our employees like employees. With support and their federal and states rights

Here’s the truth:
In South Carolina, it’s illegal to pay commission stylists as 1099 contractors:

Yet some salons still do it—and that leaves YOU:
• Paying double in taxes
• With zero protection if you get injured (no workmen’s comp)
• Personally liable without proper insurance
• And not even guaranteed hourly pay if your book is empty (which W-2 requires) no clients? No pay when you’re 1099

1099 = chair renters, suite owners, true freelancers.
If your salon requires staff meetings, dress codes, or education—they can’t legally 1099 you.

No wonder people think commission salons are sketchy—some are.
