Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss
-Anthony Canova
C. 1787

The tale of Cupid and Psyche, first recorded in Apuleius’ Metamorphoses in the second century AD, tells of Psyche, a mortal princess whose extraordinary beauty provoked Venus’ jealousy. Venus ordered Cupid to make Psyche fall in love with a hideous creature, but Cupid instead fell in love with her himself. Their secret romance came with one condition: Psyche could never see his face. Persuaded by her sisters, she broke this promise, causing Cupid to leave. To win him back, Psyche endured a series of trials set by Venus, culminating in a journey to the Underworld. There, she opened a mysterious box containing divine beauty and fell into an enchanted sleep. Cupid ultimately found her and awakened her with a kiss.

The War and Us
- Edward Okun
C. 1917-1923
Medium: Oil on Canvas

“Okuń’s decorative painting is built on a characteristic contrast between realistically rendered figures and a fanciful, colourful and flat background. The ‘us’ in the title are the painter and his wife, Zofia Wanda Tolkemit. Their figures fill the centre of the composition, dressed in elegant black clothes, wearing polished shoes and covered in a black cloak. They walk slightly hunched over and worried in the midst of fantastical, clashing beasts.

The lurking danger was suggested by the painter on several levels. The water lilies, which the artist’s figure holds in his hands, have red-coloured petal tips as if stained with blood. An old, grey-haired woman with a sinister expression, barefoot and dressed in a nightdress and a brown bedcover, creeps up next to the two spouses and grabs the hem of their cloak. Her features resemble that of the archetypical witch. She is the personification of war and hunger, although she has also been interpreted in other ways – Julia Henshaw, in relation to the misogynistic themes of turn-of-the-century art, saw her as the personification of male fear of women.”

The Swan (No.1)
-Hilma Af Klint
C.1915

“This piece is the first in Hilma af Klint’s The Swan series. Featuring two literal representations of the titular bird, the artist uses this first piece to highlight the dualities she is exploring in the series. Two swans, one white and one black, meet beak-to-beak in the middle of the piece, wingtips touching, each the negative image of the other. By using the swan as her visual key to the concepts she explores, af Klint is referencing alchemy, where the image of a swan represents opposites in harmony. Black and white, masculine and feminine, and light and dark are all explored throughout af Klint’s series”

M-Maybe
By Roy Lichtenstein
C.1965

“M-Maybe presents us with one of Lichtenstein’s standards: an idealized, romance novel-type woman placed within a generic cityscape setting. Characteristically colored in the primary hues of red, yellow an blue, Benday dots color the woman’s skin while adding reflection to the background windows. Comprising nearly the entire surface of the painting, the blonde, windswept-haired woman holds her gloved hand to her face in worry, while we read her almost hopeful expression that her beau has become ill rather than, the viewer is forced to presume, having forgotten about her.
Through this single comic strip image
Lichtenstein creates an amusing tension - the viewer searches for a deeper narrative surrounding the absent companion even while the concern of the woman - impeccably dressed and hair stylishly coiffed - is overshadowed by her stylish glamour.”

Beauty Looking Back
- Hishikawa Moronobu
C.1690

“Beauty Looking Back may appear to be a simple portrait of a well-dressed woman. But it represents something much larger than just one person. This single image exemplifies the changing lifestyles, artwork, and fashion of Japan’s Tokugawa period. The Tokugawa period is also referred to as the Edo period. This was a time of internal peace and economic growth under the conservative Tokugawa shogunate. To control the public, the shogunate designated walled areas inside cities for pleasure centers. These areas were filled with brothels, teahouses, and Kabuki theaters. This environment gave rise to ukiyo-e, a new form of Japanese artwork. The word ukiyo came from Buddhism. It originally referred to the fleeting nature of life. During the Tokugawa period, the character for “transitory” was swapped out for the homonym meaning “ephemeral.” This ukiyo referred to the free-flowing nature of urban life. Hishikawa Moronobu is widely considered the first master of ukiyo-e. Hishikawa painted Beauty Looking Back in 1690. Beauty Looking Back captures the fashions of the time. The subject’s back is to the viewer, allowing for a full display of her elaborate hairstyle and embroidered kimono. The Tokugawa period was a golden era for nihongami. Hairstyles were a visible marker of one’s place in society. In Beauty Looking Back, the woman’s intricately looped hair is secured with combs. This hairstyle was popular with the wealthy and fashionable. The woman’s clothing also exhibits the tastes of the time. Her bright red furisode is embellished with chrysanthemums and cherry blossoms. Furisodes were traditionally worn only before marriage. Hishikawa was known for his command of nuihaku. He likely used this decorative technique on the woman’s furisode. Today Beauty Looking Back belongs to the Tokyo National Museum. While admiring the painting, it’s easy to imagine its subject walking through Edo’s bustling pleasure center. With just a single figure, Hishikawa has frozen this era in time.”

In Italian
- Basquiat
C.1983

“Created in 1983, ‘In Italian’ is a tumultuous spectacle of fragmented imagery, layered text, and a palette of frenzied colors. The work confronts viewers with themes of race, power, and the human condition, establishing a dialogue that crosses generational and gender boundaries. Basquiat’s propensity for presenting harsh truths within a chaotic structure mirrors the modern experience, making it a universally relatable piece. ”
