Tampa congresswoman Kathy Castor will keep her seat in the U.S. House. She overtook her opponent, Republican Mike Beltran, with 51% of the vote. In a rare debate last month at the Tampa Tiger Bay Club, Castor said he would’ve been a rubber stamp for the Trump administration. Her district - along with many others - was redrawn earlier this year by the Republican-dominated legislature. Democrats did break the state legislature’s supermajority. What was once a safe seat for Democrats – District 14 now represents more conservative-leaning areas. At her victory speech, she thanked people who voted for her and those who wanted to, but couldn’t due to what she called “egregious gerrymandering.” Beltran, who called himself “Maga Mike” during the campaign, conceded after the race was called. Castor has served in Congress for 20 years and will return to D.C. to represent much of Tampa and parts of Hillsborough County. 🎥: Meghan Bowman #electionday #midterms #results #congress #voting by @wusfpublicmedia
While Republicans’ supermajority in Florida was broken, they did secure the top spot in the governor’s race. Trump-endorsed Byron Donalds beat his Democratic opponent, David Jolly, with 50% of the vote. Donalds is the state’s first Black governor. He had a massive fundraising advantage over Jolly. His victory extends Republicans’ 28-year hold on the state’s governorship. Despite distancing himself from President Trump at the tail end of his campaign, he thanked him. Donalds says he talked to Jolly after the race was called and congratulated him on a well-run campaign. In Jolly’s concession speech, he asked Donalds to remember that the people who voted Democratic are not radical communists or socialists, but his constituents too. Despite his loss, Jolly says the close race could set the state up for the next Democratic candidate for governor to win. Donalds’ Lt. Gov will be former Miami State Sen. Bryan Avila. 🎥: Meghan Bowman #electionday #midterms #results #governor #voting by @wusfpublicmedia

A blue wave did indeed hit the U.S. last night, but it didn’t quite reach Florida. Republican incumbent Senator Ashley Moody narrowly overtook Democratic candidate Angie Nixon. But the race was close. Nixon drummed up enthusiasm among younger voters, but she didn’t gain enough momentum to push her over the edge. Moody told the crowd at her victory party she was concerned about the socialist movement. Nixon was ahead in the beginning, but in the end Moody pulled ahead with almost 51% of the vote. But in her concession speech, Nixon said the fight isn’t over. Moody’s seat will be up for reelection in 2028. She took over the position last year for Marco Rubio. 🎥: Meghan Bowman #electionday #midterms #polls #conversations #voting by @wusfpublicmedia
