At WVU, we're running to change the future of medicine. Dr. Ali Rezai and his team at the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute are slowing Alzheimer’s Disease. Helping end cravings for addictive drugs. Giving control back to those with Parkinson’s disease.

Not every seizure looks like a convulsion.

Seizures come from abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Because the brain controls the rest of the body, a seizure can look very different depending on where it starts.

Dr. Andy Chan of the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute explains why recognizing these less obvious signs matters, and why raising awareness with our community partners is so important.

This #NationalEpilepsyAwarenessMonth, learn the many faces of seizures so you can recognize them and help. by @wvu_rni

🏆 National Champions!

WVU Neurosurgery residents Drs. Arteaga and McClure won first place in the @cns_update 2026 SANS Challenge at the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting!

Competing against neurosurgery residency programs from across the country, the WVU team finished with 3,900 points — an impressive 2,100-point lead over the second-place team.

Congratulations to our residents and faculty mentor Dr. Brandmeir on this outstanding accomplishment!

A proud moment for WVU Neurosurgery and the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute. 💛💙

As clocks fall back this weekend, Dr. Randy Nelson, chair of the WVU Department of Neuroscience at the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, shares insights in Scientific American on how the timing of light exposure influences our brain health and overall well-being.

In his latest article, Dr. Nelson explores the concept of “paleo lighting” — aligning our exposure to light and darkness more closely with the natural cycles that regulate our internal clocks.

Modern habits, including artificial light and screen exposure at night and limited morning sunlight, can disrupt our circadian rhythms. The effects extend beyond sleep, influencing metabolism, immune function, and overall health.

Read Dr. Nelson’s latest piece to learn more about the science behind our internal clocks and how small changes in daily routines can support better health. Link to the RNI Newsroom in our bio.

Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do for someone experiencing domestic violence is simply to be there. When someone you care about is experiencing abuse, it's natural to want to help. But healing and finding a path forward are deeply personal, and every survivor's circumstances are different.

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI) reminds friends, families, and loved ones that meaningful support starts with patience, compassion, and understanding.

Instead of pressuring someone to leave before they're ready, listen without judgment, respect their decisions, and remind them they have someone to turn to.

You may not be able to make the decision for them, but you can make sure they know they don't have to face it alone.

The walk may be over, but the fight against Alzheimer's keeps going.

Our RNI team joined neighbors from across Morgantown at Kendrick Family Ballpark for this year's Walk to End Alzheimer’s, walking for the patients and families we care for every day, for the researchers working toward better treatments, and for everyone who has lost someone to this disease.

Thank you to every team member, volunteer, and supporter who stopped by the RNI table and walked alongside us.

Donations are open through Dec. 31. Support our team at the link in our bio.

Healing is difficult when basic needs remain uncertain. For survivors of domestic violence, recovery can involve more than addressing physical and emotional trauma. Finding safe housing, accessing legal assistance, and meeting everyday needs can be just as important.

At the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI), we recognize these challenges and work closely with community partners, including Legal Aid of West Virginia and domestic violence shelters, to help connect survivors with the resources they need.

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we're highlighting how collaboration between healthcare providers and community organizations can remove barriers to care and build a stronger support network.

Because every survivor deserves more than access to treatment. They deserve the opportunity to rebuild their lives with dignity, stability, and hope.

Epilepsy is more common than many people realize.

About 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy in their lifetime. Dr. Andy Chan, a neurologist at the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, estimates that 20,000 to 25,000 West Virginians live with epilepsy.

"And that's a conservative estimate," Chan says. “There is a huge gap to be closed here."

Our team works every day to close that gap. You can help close it, too. by @wvu_rni

Recovery takes more than medical care. It takes a community of support. For survivors of domestic violence, the path to healing often extends far beyond the walls of a healthcare facility.

At the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI), our commitment to survivors doesn't end when an appointment is over. Through collaboration with local shelters, community organizations, and specialized support services, we help connect survivors with resources that address their needs beyond medical treatment.

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we're recognizing the importance of these partnerships and the role they play in helping survivors access the care and support they deserve.

Because meaningful recovery requires more than treatment. It requires connection, compassion, and a community working together.

You don't have to take the next step alone. For survivors of domestic violence, having someone you trust by your side can make a meaningful difference when seeking care.

At the RNI, survivors can bring a family member, loved one, or trusted support person to their appointments. Whether they offer encouragement, provide reassurance, or simply show up, that support matters.

Our team also works closely with survivors to address individual needs, remove barriers to care, and create an experience centered on comfort, compassion, and collaboration.

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we're reminding survivors that support can take many forms, and you don't have to navigate recovery alone.
