It’s a strange feeling – joyful, exhilarating, but also slightly unsettling, to hear “Giants” in the voices of so many. I was one of these kids once, belting national songs at the parade, swelling with unadulterated pride. Later, as I learnt of certain things Singapore has done, I began to question parts of our national narrative, and reject the version of myself that once trusted it so wholeheartedly. Now, I have become part of its instrument by contributing lyrics and melodies sung by seas of children at the top of their lungs, soaring with patriotism. But it feels… good. And maybe it feels good because I do, deeply, love my country. I love giggling with the aunties at the coffeeshop. I love hearing taxi uncles philosophise and complain. I have a long list of favourite local foods, and where to find the best hawkers. I love the music of Singlish, and its ruthless efficiency. I love our creative community, and am surrounded by the coolest people determined to do the coolest things against all odds. I feel the weight of legacy built by artists that came before me, writing the cultural identity of a young nation from scratch. I feel honoured to stand on their shoulders, carry their torch, and be a small part of honing a voice that is truly our own. And we can all continue to question, to challenge, to strive for better. And maybe, the more we care to fight for the things that matter, the more Singaporean we truly are. So – thank you @briangothongtan @nitewonder @noorlinah2005, for inviting me to write this song, @eelnai of @pk.records, for working so hard on the production, and to @imanfandi17, for so elegantly embodying my little contribution. Happy birthday, Singapore. I am proud to be part of your oeuvre. ——— 🎥 with kind permission from: 1 – @fricklezie 2 – Vicarious Walker 3 – @chriztong 4 – @eatincheeeeken 5 – @kristalmelson 6 – @ginettechittick 7 – @risaannwong 8 – @wea.versguild 9 – @eatincheeeeken 10 – @dunearnsecondaryschool 11 – @chriztong 12 – Full video youtube.com/@VicariousWalker by @wweishh
From experimental underground gigs to the national stage, @wweishh is a creative force who refuses to be pinned down. The multidisciplinary artist discusses the "addictive" pull of the stage and her commitment to serving the work above all else. Whether she is restaging her award-winning ‘Secondary: The Musical’ or exploring her Hakka heritage through the haunting melodies of stray gods, Weish’s practice is a masterclass in sincere storytelling. "It’s an old-school mindset: you do your thing, stay true to yourself, and trust that if you’re sincere, people will find their way to you," she notes. The very first Hakka folk song I learned, only 2 years ago, is 𝘯𝘺𝘢𝘪 𝘨𝘶𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘨𝘶𝘰𝘯𝘨 – a song about rootlessness. In it, a daughter and mother pay respects to the moon, asking it where home is. Hakka 客家 translates to “guest people”. Maybe I am still a Hakka nomad, rootless not from place, but from culture. Maybe I will always be a stranger, looking in from the outside, yearning to call somewhere home. Thank you again to my dear friends and collaborators behind 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘺 𝘨𝘰𝘥𝘴, and to The Straits Times for recognising this work. Congratulations to all nominees and winners of the 2026 Awards ☆ 📷: Moonrise Studios by @wweishh
