Today, the chapter of Xi Beta in Omega Psi Phi fraternity incorporated, recognizes The Freedom House Ambulance Service in Pittsburgh, PA, in Honor of Black History Month. The Freedom House Ambulance Service in Pittsburgh, established in the late 1960s, consisted largely of Black men who became the nation’s first formally trained paramedics. When most ambulance services simply transported patients, they brought in advanced lifesaving care and helped shape the model for modern emergency medical services across the country. Even while dealing with racism and limited funding, their expertise and dedication revolutionized emergency medicine. Their contributions deserve much greater recognition. by @xibetaques
