⛓️ The 7 deadly sins ⛓️

Books that represent the 7 deadly sins 🕷️🖤

Pride:- The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.
This book is not horror in a gore sense, but vanity as a body horror engine. The portrait does the rotting for him.

Greed:- The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith.
Wanting someone else’s life badly enough to take it. Cold, tense and deeply unsettling.

Lust:- Perfume by Patrick Süskind.
Obsession and desire twisted into something monstrous, a killer collecting scent rather than bodies.

Envy:- You by Caroline Kepnes.
Joe’s fixation is envy wearing a romance costume: he wants Beck’s life, her friends, her attention and he’ll kill anyone in the way.

Gluttony:- Hannibal by Thomas Harris.
Lecter’s dinners are the whole joke and the whole horror. Gluttony as refinement. Brutal and the most genuinely disturbing book on this list.

Wrath:- Carrie by Stephen King.
The cleanest wrath novel in the genre: humiliation in, annihilation out. Prom scene forever.

Sloth:- My Year of Rest and Relaxation by
Ottessa Moshfegh.
A woman deliberately sleeping her life away. Sloth as a survival strategy is genuinely unsettling rather than gory.

When I Kill You by B A Paris 🦋

Nell Masters knows someone is watching her. She can feel it at home, at work, everywhere in between. And she’s pretty sure she knows why, because fourteen years ago she was Elle Nugent, the girl who became so obsessed with finding a killer that her life fell apart.

Now she has a new name, a small circle of friends, a love interest and a stalker who seems to have figured it all out. Is someone from her past back for revenge?

The alternating past-and-present timeline, which Paris ties together so neatly that the reveal lands like a slap. There are also little journal-style snippets woven through. A proper popcorn thriller: fast, paranoid, and impossible to put down once it gets going. Nell is a love-hate protagonist; she’s annoying enough at times that you want to shake her, which honestly makes her feel real.

Verdict: If you like domestic thrillers with a secret identity, a stalker POV, and a twist you won’t see coming then this one’s definitely for you. Perfect for a one-sitting.

“Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing."

Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray

The novel is a gorgeous, poisonous fairy tale about the price of vanity. Dorian makes a devil's bargain while his portrait ages and rots while he stays forever young and beautiful — what follows is a slow & stylish descent. It's a book that feels like it's winking at you even as it unsettles you.

Dorian's real sin isn't his beauty but it's his pride. He worships his own image so completely that he stops caring about the soul it's supposed to reflect. His vanity becomes a kind of moral blindness: the more perfect he looks, the more rotten he lets himself become. Wilde shows that pride isn't just loving yourself too much; it's loving yourself at the expense of everyone else.

So when that goes what do you have left? Nothing.

Wilde's prose is pure wit glittering, aphoristic, and dangerously quotable. Arguably literature's greatest study of shallowness, casual cruelty and hedonistic selfishness, Wilde lays it down here with perfection! This was my first experience reading Oscar Wilde but I have to admit I disliked this book at first, a re-read changed my perspective. The dialogue sparkles with paradox and every other sentence reads like it was written to be underlined. It's decadent and lush, but with a sharp, cold edge underneath.

“In all of the world, there is no heart like mine.”

The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux.

Beneath the glittering stage, a voice haunts the dark. He was her Angel of Music and her prison. 🎭

The story explores love, obsession, isolation, and the tragedy of a man whose genius is overshadowed by his monstrous appearance — a classic “beauty and the beast” tale with a darker, more tragic edge.

The climax unfolds during a performance of Faust, when Erik kidnaps Christine onstage and drags her back to his lair, threatening to blow up the opera house unless she agrees to stay with him. In a moment of compassion, Christine kisses Erik which was an act of pity and humanity that finally break’s through his bitterness. Overwhelmed, Erik releases her, allows her to leave with Raoul and later dies alone, his heart “broken” but at peace.

Review coming soon ❤️‍🔥

“When faced with true sorrow, people lose even the strength to shed tears.”

Strange Pictures by Uketsu (trans. Jim Ron) ✨

The premise:
A student stumbles on a cryptic blog called Oh No, Not Raku! With a string of unsettling pictures and a foreboding final post. Digging in, he becomes part of a much larger puzzle that spans decades and weaves together a string of murders.

My thoughts:

The mystery is told through the pictures. Uketsu builds the whole story around analyzing drawings where some are vital evidence, and some are just there to help you see what’s happening. Some narrative leaps can feel a bit far-fetched and a few motivations feel thin.

It jumps between timelines with seemingly no connection, then slowly, chillingly, everything clicks together. The way the plots are woven is genuinely clever. Despite the dark subject matter, there are moments that quietly break your heart. Uketsu sneaks real emotion into the horror, and by the end you’re looking at the whole mystery differently. It stays with you long after you finish.

A quick, clever, unsettling read — perfect for a mystery that does something new.

Some cases never close. They just wait🕯️

The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James ✨

The Premise:

Shea Collins runs a true-crime blog called ‘The Book of Cold Cases’ and when she lands a job as a receptionist at a doctor’s office, she never expects her boss to be the Dr. Adrienne Hale: the woman acquitted of a series of unsolved murders in the 1970s. When Adrienne offers Shea an interview, the two women form a chilling, uneasy bond that pulls Shea deeper into a mystery that refuses to stay buried.

What I loved:
👉🏼 Dual timelines done right! St. James weaves the 1970s and present day together so seamlessly, each chapter tightening the noose.

👉🏼 The atmosphere is foggy coastal Oregon, a creepy old house and a protagonist with her own dark past. It’s haunting in the best way.

👉🏼 Shea being an unreliable but sympathetic narrator. Her trauma and obsession make her the perfect (and imperfect) guide through the case.

👉🏼 True crime podcasts and cold case obsessions.

👉🏼 Slow-burn psychological suspense.

The pacing is deliberate, if you need nonstop action then this book might feel slow in the middle. But, that said, if you love atmosphere and character-driven mystery, this book is definitely unputdownable.

“You wanted me gone so badly, you buried me alive.”

Parolee and former master thief Isla Dalton just wants a clean slate to protect her Nana (Susanna) build a life that stays intact, but Isla realised that trouble loves her when she arrives at a secluded property and finds Celeste Callaghan murdered; the woman who summoned her with promises about her dead sister Eden. In a town that stopped asking questions long ago, Isla becomes the easiest answer.

Meanwhile, Wyatt Callaghan had the perfect plan to murder his wife and take control of the CallaCore empire. There’s just one problem: someone got there first. As hallucinations creep in, ghosts from his past show up and letters from his dead wife arrive uninvited we see that the edges of his reality begin to splinter. Like a door left ajar, waiting to be pushed open.

What I enjoyed:

The genre blending done right: crime, paranormal, corporate corruption, trauma and psychological suspense all braided into one taut thriller. The sharp pacing helps suspense build steadily, each chapter peeling back new surprises that make it hard to put down and the emotional weight of the characters underneath the tension. Ankesh balances psychological dread with the supernatural without losing the human heart of the story.

A town full of secrets with twenty-five years of buried truths, vanishing landowners and a cottage fire that refuses to stay quiet unlike the town’s residents.

If you love thrillers where the lines between victim and perpetrator blur, Ajar will keep you up past midnight.
