“I could not speak fluently in life, but I could talk for an hour in an act.” When she first came to America in 2016 to study musical theatre at AMDA, Yanzi Ding @yanziding2222 could only understand what her teachers said. Most of what she wanted to say was expressed in silence. If we fast forward to the end of this story, we will see Yanzi communicating fluently with her professors, fellow classmates, and everyone else she encounters on and off stage. “The funny thing is that I do learn English through acting,” Yanzi said. Could it be that bilingual and multilingual people are better actors, because they go an extra mile to understand a role in a script, and the content is comprehended in more than one language?

Guest: Yanzi Ding is an actor, playwright, harpist, composer, and consultant from Taiwan. She has won the Best Actress award at the World Film Carnival Festival, Los Angeles Cinematography Awards (LACA), Paris International Film Awards, and was a Silver Winner at the Tokyo Film Awards. Her stage play Rushi: Three Reincarnations of a Chinese Woman had its world premiere at a New York East Broadway theater and was invited to the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA). One of her most recent roles is in a dance theatre called Everyday is A Pig’s Birthday. She always speaks ardently about how to help immigrant artists build a career in the United States.

≪Joy Luck Club≫ Devised Theatre Adaptation

Age of AI | Return to the Theatre AI時代回歸劇場計劃

Adapted from Amy Tan’s acclaimed novel, and inspired by the landmark 1993 film adaptation, this work offers a deeply moving, nuanced portrayal of post-WWII Chinese women, the immigrant journey, and the tender, complex cultural collisions between mothers and daughters across generations.

Diving into this character has given me the space to reflect deeply on what it means to be an immigrant and an Asian woman today in 2026- the quiet resilience, the persistent challenges, and our enduring strength.

Last month, we presented the very first public reading of Act One of Chunxiang: A Queer Musical 🌸

For the first time, we were joined by incredible singers who brought our characters to life through 11 original songs in Chinese with English subtitles, performed with live accompaniment by our composer Yuelan.

Our audience loved the musical reading and were curious about the development of Act Two. Some commented that the story reminded them of an ancient mythological love story, with musical vibes from Hadestown and Come From Away. One audience member shared that “It felt more like just before dawn, when you’re already awake; when the day hasn’t asked anything of you yet, and something in you is straining slightly forward.”

The top song picked by our audience is Song number 4 Anthem of Hell (地狱赞歌), a dark rock song sung by the ghosts of hell, in which Du Liniang joins them on her way to her trial.

Two other audience favorites capture two reunions between Chunxiang and Du Liniang - an earlier, briefer one, and a later, more private and prolonged one.

Our audience’s second pick was Song number 6, Her Lady, Her Maid (她的小姐，她的丫鬟), where Chunxiang surprising Du Liniang with her presence in the middle of her trial with the King of Hell.

Our audience’s third pick was the final song of Act One, Guan-guan Cry the Ospreys (关关雎鸠) - where Du Liniang finally has her moment with Chunxiang, seeking to confess the true feelings that led to her death, while Chunxiang rushes to convince her that coming back alive through forbidden dark magic is possible.

In the fictional world of Chunxiang, the Mid-Autumn Festival marks the very day Chunxiang crossed into the underworld to find her lady. On this poetic anniversary, we find ourselves manifesting a happy ending for both of our young heroines. 🌕

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special milestone. We can't wait to share what comes next in Act Two! 🎶

Some production photos from ⟪春香牡丹失魂记⟫ 音樂劇workshop -

Still thinking about this production and the people who brought it to life.

I was fascinated to discover that the script was written by @qinan_x Ruirun, you can not believe it comes from a neuroscientist PhD.
Her literary background and the curiosity about where contemporary theater can go.

This is why I fell in love with musical theater so much~ When music and storytelling truly belong together, they can reach somewhere deeper, even change the way we feel and see the world.

I finally got to work with sha @shanychuang ~ After the performance, she gave me some new tools for moving from mezzo-soprano toward soprano in a healthier way.

@yuelanmusic originally composed the music with English lyrics in mind, yet with just a few adjustments, it fit the Chinese lyrics beautifully.
As an ABC, she has a natural ability to bring Chinese and Western musical theater together. Some passages were so emotionally demanding that I sometimes had to cry it out before going back to rehearsal.

Du Liniang杜麗娘 is a very young girl in the original text. But life experience allows me to understand the maturity of her perspective, especially the longing that makes it possible to recognize her soulmate.
