Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack is calling on the Alberta government to give the city stronger powers to crack down on builders who repeatedly violate construction rules. Currently, the city can issue fines of up to $10,000, but Knack argues that isn’t enough to discourage some developers. He’s asking the province to allow Edmonton to revoke business licences, deny permits, and impose tougher penalties on repeat offenders. The mayor also wants to prevent builders from avoiding consequences by shutting down their companies and reopening under new names. Knack says the proposed changes could improve construction standards and address growing concerns surrounding infill development across Edmonton. The province would need to approve legislative changes before the city could use these additional powers. by @yeg
Edmonton police have helped bust an international cellphone scam believed to have stolen more than $20 million from approximately 100 victims in the city so far in 2026. According to police, scammers operating through call centres in Pakistan impersonated Rogers, Telus, and Virgin Mobile, offering free or heavily discounted phones. After victims received their devices, scammers would call back claiming the wrong phone had been shipped and trick them into sending it to another address. Police arrested 31-year-old Johnathan Cesar, who faces multiple fraud-related charges. A search of an Edmonton home also uncovered suspected forgery equipment, fake IDs, and electronic devices. The investigation helped authorities in Pakistan shut down several suspected scam call centres. Police are urging residents to verify suspicious offers directly with their phone providers. by @yeg

U.S. President Donald Trump says Canada and the United States are close to reaching a trade agreement that could include reviving the Keystone XL pipeline. Speaking Sunday, Trump claimed Canada would build and cover the entire cost of the pipeline, which was originally intended to transport Alberta oil to U.S. refineries. Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed progress in trade discussions but has not announced any agreement to fund the project. Keystone XL was cancelled in 2021, although a separate project using some of its existing infrastructure is now being advanced. No final trade agreement or Canadian funding commitment has been confirmed. by @yeg
