We wish to extend our condolences to the members of Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, family, friends, and community members who were affected by the incident at CFB Wainwright incident Saturday. CapitalCare’s community is living the grief of this tragedy alongside the CFB Wainwright community. Our Kipnes Centre for Veterans has a long-standing relationship with many in the local military communities, some of whom now live at Kipnes, many who volunteer, visit and spend their time with our residents and families. Their contributions have made Kipnes stronger and the CapitalCare community extends our thoughts and condolences

We are grateful to the care teams, front-line staff and first responders who continue to provide support to those injured and affected by the incident and we wish a full recovery to those involved. by @yegcapitalcare

With the nicer weather residents have a chance to get out and enjoy their communities. Thanks to Country Side Golf Club and Greenland Garden Centre for creating welcoming spaces for everyone to enjoy! by @yegcapitalcare

Thanks to all of the volunteers who helped to get the McConnell Place North garden ready for spring! Thanks to their work the garden is a beautiful outdoor space for residents to enjoy again. by @yegcapitalcare

Signs of spring are appearing across our centres. Kipnes residents watched as eggs incubated at the centre over the past 21 days hatched chicks just a few days ago. And at Strathcona residents released the butterflies they've watched transform. by @yegcapitalcare

Flashback to the Annual Curling Bonspiel at CapitalCare Kipnes Centre for Veterans earlier this year. This bonspiel brings the community together through playing and cheering, the between game camaraderie, and of course some great competition. by @yegcapitalcare

The signs of spring are finally here. Residents at CapitalCare Strathcona have enjoyed watching a Canada goose return to nest at the site once again. Nesting just outside the dining room window residents have been able to watch the goose's progress with six or seven goslings arriving today. by @yegcapitalcare

Thanks to the work of the CapitalCare Foundation, and their donors, this sunny space at CapitalCare Strathcona is now a lovely bistro decorated with a mural. The artwork was voted on by residents, with one side depicting a small cafe and the other showing off a local park space. by @yegcapitalcare

Thanks to Oilers Superfan, McMullet, for stopping by to make sure CapitalCare Norwood's resident fans are game ready! by @yegcapitalcare

“I wanted to start volunteering because I was curious about how older generations view the world and what I could learn from their experiences. My experience at CapitalCare Lynnwood has been calm and meaningful. I often spend time sitting with residents, listening to their stories about their younger years and what life was like back then. Those conversations have helped me realize how much history and how many interesting experiences people carry with them, which is a big reason why I continue to go back.”

Vivaan has volunteered at Lynnwood alongside friends and family for the past couple years. He sets up a booth during holidays like Easter and Christmas where he sells festive cards, flowers and centrepieces to raise money for Lynnwood’s recreation.

Vivaan and his mother, Impa, supply and create the cards and flower arrangements themselves. They had previously been involved in initiatives like “Happy Helping Hands” to support children and underprivileged members of society. After spending some time at Lynnwood, they wanted to broaden their reach to support seniors as well and raise money for Lynnwood’s community.

“It’s great when we do popcorn sales and have volunteers help with that, but these fundraisers are 100% profit for Lynnwood as they cover not only the cost for supplies but also take the time to create the centerpieces and flower arrangements,” says Renee Vansickle, Volunteer Services Coordinator at CapitalCare Lynnwood.

Volunteer Crystal Haché has helped over 50 veterans at the Kipnes Centre for Veterans to receive handmade quilts through the Quilts of Valour program.

“Being a veteran myself, I want to let them know they’re not forgotten. Canada doesn’t forget their service. I think it’s so important for these veterans to be valued, just so they know they’re remembered and loved,” says Crystal.

Volunteers like Crystal help to build community and recognize the unique interests of CapitalCare residents. During National Volunteer Week we want to say thank you to all of our volunteers who make a difference.

You can read more on the CapitalCare website about the Quilts of Valour program and one of this year's recipients, Jack Manson, a 100 year old veteran and World Hockey Champion. Link in bio. by @yegcapitalcare
