- There is no such thing as silence. Silence is layered.
There are words we want to say but cannot.
Words we never find the courage to speak.
Words abandoned before they reach the mouth.
Words buried beneath other words until they disappear from view. And yet, silence is never empty. Even when we say nothing, leaves rustle in the wind.
A neighbour closes a door. Footsteps echo on the stairs.
Children call to one another.
The world continues to speak around us.
Sometimes, our silence speaks with it. There is no perfect silence. What appears to be white is covered with a subtle layer of grain. White, once confined to the background, becomes a surface in its own right, lingering between text and image. Under the Palms Covering the Skies traces histories that have disappeared, memories that have been erased, and fragments that remain. Rather than treating absence as emptiness, the exhibition reads it as a trace that continues to bear witness. In response, I found myself asking:
What if white, like silence, were never empty?
What if the background no longer remained simply a background? There is no such thing as silence.

Sayaka Katsumoto @sayaka_katsumoto & Jane Hwang @janehwangjane “Under the Palms Covering the Skies” 16.04. - 07.06.2026 Eröffnung: Mittwoch, 15.04.2026, 19.00 Uhr Studio & studioblau Die Ausstellung Under the Palms Covering the Skies vereint die forschungsbasierten Arbeiten der in Berlin lebenden Künstlerinnen Jane Hwang und Sayaka Katsumoto. - This August, I had the pleasure of participating in the Daegu Short Film Festival @diffnposter @diff.kr poster exhibition through a long and meaningful connection. My heartfelt thanks go to designer @gu.kim.zong.i, Minho (Gu Minho), a dear friend who has invited me every summer since 2019 and has always shared the stories of Daegu with such love and care. Thanks to Minho’s warm consideration, I was able to work with joy and a sense of ease every time. I’m also deeply grateful to Director Baek So-hye, who told me so warmly that seeing my poster felt like receiving a gift. - Film: Quince | Directed by Baek So-hye Poster concept: The playful phrase “모가 뭐가 모과 머가” comes from a poem of the same name. Moving between the layered meanings of quince and quitte (모과 / “to leave”), the poster carries the lingering scent of quince that recalls someone who has gone, even as time moves on. img 2. from the scene of « quince » directed by Baek So-hye img 3. by @diffnposter img 4. by @gu.kim.zong.i img 5. by @kkotshin img 6. my desktop by @yes_young
