Asana
Exploring the Vinyasa Krama practice with more detail
than we can in weekly classes.
Variations on Opening and Closing Sequences and a compendium of Vinyasas with a few Yogic Dands (Strength Moves)
Relaxed effort and intimacy with breath
that makes Asana a Dharana practice.
Dharana a focused, calm, concentrated mind,
suitable for of Dhyana (meditation)

Study
We will start to study of the wonderful
“Yoga Yajnavalkya”
which T. Krishnamacharya considered one of the
most important classical yoga texts.
It predates and informs many of the better known
yoga scriptures we are familiar with.

The Yajnavalkya is unique in that it’s main character is
a female yogini called Gargi who is Yajnavalkya’s wife.Essentially she represents each of us, as she asks practical questions of the Sage about how to conduct oneself in the world, how to practice pranayama, Marma Sthana, Kundalini Awakening, Evolution of the Soul etc.

I enjoy the tender tone of the dialogue between Gargi and her husband, they obviously love and honour each other very much and are totally absorbed in this most holy, sacred and secret knowledge, which is still so relevant for us today.

Pranayama
Our Pranayama session will consist of variations in Kapalabhati and Bastri followed by Ujjayi Pratiloma which combines
Ujjayi breath with Nadi Shodhana, Marma Sthana and Breath retention. but it’s a process that takes time and we will start slow.

Meditation on the Elements
I will introduce this practice of intimacy with the elements.
Earth. Water. Fire. Air. Space and Conciouness.
Which manifest the body/mind complex
and the Natural World,
It’s essentially a meditation on impermanence#yogastudioely and beauty.

The health of the internal organs is crucial to our physical health and the equilibrium of mind that we are seeking through yoga.
Many of the little understood benefits of Pranayama,

Q. Ramaswami Sir, Vinyasa Krama is a vast system of asanas and vinyasas. How are we supposed to do it all?
A. When you go to a restaurant, you don’t try and eat the whole menu!

Vinyasa Krama Classes with Mark
start again next week in studio and livestream.
Tues & Wed 7-8.30 pm
Booking link in bio.

This terms practice...
Sessions will rotate weekly around the “Signature Series Sequences”
1. Forward bending,
2. Backward bending,
3. Twisting,
4. Supine
5. Standing.

The opening (Hasta Vinyasas) and Closing
(Asana Mudras and Pranyama/Meditation) sequences
will remain similar throughout.

This rotational system will give you a well rounded and more extensive range of asanas which address all aspects of the physical body, internal organs and nervous system.

The middle part of the practice changes daily and is rotated over a five day period. When yo miss a day or have a rest day, just pick up where you left off.

Viewing your practice as a five day event allows you to practice slowly and attentively without rushing to get everything in, it also allows the time needed for daily Pranayama and Meditation, which are integral to a holistic yoga practice.

Shorter or longer versions of these sequences are available depending on the time you can dedicate to your practice. The sequences are a foundational template they are not set in stone, when you are familiar you can get creative and adapt to your own needs.

The sequences are simple and accessible, they can be memorised with repetition and a little effort, you will then be rewarded with confidence, variation and sustainability in your practice.
