This winter I made a decision to be done with professional racing. It’s been a good run, and it became overwhelmingly clear to me that it’s now time to hang it up. I feel so grateful to have met all of you incredible people through this sport. So many of you have been my support through thick and through thin. A heart felt thank you, you are a family I will always be a part of. 🙏 It’s a tough sport which teaches you so many important lessons. For now I feel I have learned all I can here and it’s time for the next journey. Life is so full and so beautiful and there are so many things we can learn and discover. It’s time I get off this crazy carousel because I am so curious what the rest of the amusement park has to offer . I hope you enjoy this collection of photos through time. 2009-2024. From cat 5 at the local velodrome, to some big moments in big races. I overlapped with some incredible champion riders, caught a few eras of racing, rode on some studly teams. Sweet memories I will enjoy looking back on. We all race for different reasons. And this may not come as a surprise, but some of us race to prove something, to chase or to run away from something. And as we work through that human emotional stuff, as we mature and heal.. sometimes, if lucky.. that “why” which comes from a dark place starts to dissipate. And then racing and competition in itself becomes a bit nonsensical. Or maybe I just turned into an old man all of the sudden! 😅 Im a cyclist for life, I will keep lining up on collegiate start lines, and some occasional off-road events. Thank you for being part of this story. It’s a good one. Ride on. by @you_know_inno
Such a wonderful new years gift for this podcast to be released today. Thank you for an incredible and deep conversation @brendanhousler , thank you for having me on the podcast. If you haven’t listened to @evoq.bike , it may be the most prolific American cycling interview podcast. If you’re thinking of a cyclist, they probably have been on this show. In the show I talk about how my 2023 ended, some tough times and some beautiful lessons along the way. I sincerely hope you, my friends, are doing well. I hope to be at a gravel race near you in 2024. Cheers, love, and best of luck in your endeavors. #innovibes Link for the podcast in the description. What a weekend! Had a wonderful chat with Jason and Sofia at the @gravel_worlds Gravel Family podcast on Friday. Met some great people while volunteering at number pickup the night before @gravellocos. Had some great conversations at dinner with Christie Tracy and Ben Delaney. And raced the next day! I started Gravel Locos with some fatigue in the legs leftover from the previous weekend... but 142 miles later I was on the 3rd step of the podium! Pretty incredible. I swear at mile 20 of the race I was barely hanging on, and was strongly considering pulling out of the race at the first feedzone. I mannaged to grit through it a bit longer while our front group was getting smaller and smaller. Once I was in the front selection of pro's I couldnt just quit there. I kept riding, kept pushing, drinking and eating as much as I could. Made it over the big climb with Ten Dam and Nathan, after super fun descent we caught the front group of 4. Another selection was made after some attacks and technical sections. I was riding with Finsty and Ten Dam in the lead group but all the chasing and digging deep caught up to me. I started to cramp and dropped off from their pace. My biggest mistake was not having the @carborocket RocketLytes with me, as they consistently prevent cramping for me. Doh!! Getting closer to the top step is so motivational. I am spending two weeks at Wat Sapharam international meditation center. It is not the most strict place as far as meditation centers go. It is a very peaceful place with a side of chaos as there are many young novice monks from abusive or neglectful families. They are wonderful little humans. There is time to draw and ride the bike a little bit. We eat two communal meals before noon. We are open to go to town and eat anytime, but it’s quite nice to have the smaller eating time window. There is no pressure to meditate more than you are comfortable with, and there is one class a day on meditation, mindfulness, and Buddhist philosophy with a wise and kind ”Ajahn” teacher. ❤️✌️ by @you_know_inno
This week I finished up my first quarter at SCAD Atlanta and went straight to Bentonville for Collegiate MTB Nationals, where I finished exceptionally average and had a highly above average time with the incredibly talented SCAD cycling team @scadcycling Now I begin my very long journey to Chiang Mai, Thailand for the winter break. I’ve been seriously limiting my time on social media, It really brings me a lot of joy and peace, I recommend it! I will keep drawing, riding, and taking the occasional photo to share my travels with you my dear friends. 🫶 Life is good when you let it be good. by @you_know_inno
The Rad Dirt 📍 Trinidad Colorado 📏 112 miles Bike racing, a meditation. It’s so tricky racing at altitude, especially without acclimation! You can go much too hard early on, and even if you fight for the front and make the front selection, if you’re in over your head you will pay for it two fold. I had a decent start up the city hills. After navigating around a crash and after things started to split off I found myself in chase groups. I was pushing deep but could feel the lack of recovery at the higher altitude, so backing off was not optional but necessary. I managed to hang with a fast group coming up the longest a climb, which was a rocky jeep trail. This group consisted of @dylanjawnson who was bridging back after a mechanical, @nathan.spratt @marcspratt @sjord5an_schleck @tlideen @chasethebiker @tsvetkov13 and a few others. By the time we got to the top it was only DJ, the Spratts, and Jordan left. Me and Jordan were both hanging on the back and definitely not pushing the pace. Remember what I said about altitude? I cramped in both legs as we came over the top, ironically when there was more coasting my legs decided that was it!! Few minutes later Taylor was pretty cracked-o but was riding steady and allowed me to sit on him for a while on the descent and next climb. But after another cramping sesh I was solo. That story repeated until the finish. 3 hours of cramping is a first for me. It’s wild how contrasting that is to the last few races where I was on the front and even in a position to attack for the win. This contrast is what makes bike racing such a good teacher of humility. To not attach your self worth, your ego, to the bad days and not even to the good! It’s the middle way. And I have found great wisdom in that yesterday during the race. It’s both and it is neither. USAC Gravel Nationals Gering, NE 131 miles 80’s, 5-10mph wind, dry 10th place I had incredible legs this day. I made all the splits, and then I took a gamble going off the front with @mctubbbin, and well…. lost to the house. ♣️ ♥️ ♦️ Sure, now with hindsight it’s easy to criticize myself, that the move may have been too risky, the chase group was very motivated, its Nationals after all. At one point we had 3 minutes on the chase group and it had dwindled down to about a dozen riders. I was quite hard on myself after the race but now I’m just motivated and excited that good form is there. Happy that I committed to being off the front and REALLY went for it, all it would have taken was some poor cooperation in the chase group, or a well timed late attack and I think a podium would have been very very possible. And that’s pretty exciting. Thank you for everyone for their support and kind words! I hope you all are having a wonderful September and enjoying the cooling temperatures. Arrived in Gering, Nebraska for the USAC gravel nationals! The sunsets here really get me 🤩 We race Sunday on a very similar course as Robidoux Rondevous which I won here with @chasethebiker this summer. Will a little track racing last two weeks give me that punch I’m always missing? 🧐 @mazdausa @groovemazdadenver @orangesealed @maurten_official @iamspecialized @fsa_gravel @bikedawntodusk @xpedousa @lazersportna @castellicycling #castellicustom @hedwheels @garmincycling @garminfitness @reneherse @vision_tech_usa @garmincycling @sevenpointscbd @wolf_tooth_comp by @you_know_inno
It’s been slightly crazy and wonderful whirlwind of a time settling in here at SCAD Atlanta. My collegiate teammates and team staff are such incredible, talented, and warm people. Really looking forward to developing strong bonds and friendships here over the years to come. I stopped in at @specializedatlanta and they really welcomed me with open arms. Thank you for being so hospitable ! I am so excited to be a few blocks from them. They got my bike %100 ready for the 130mile Gravel Nationals this weekend, wooof.. it definitely needed some work. Thank you Matthew and the rest of the team at Specialized ATL!! 😍 That made me feel very welcome here in Atlanta and that is DEEPLY appreciated. I’ve had a few days riding and racing the track, and while the first few days were a very rough transition and I’m not quite keeping up with my super fast team mates it’s been so sweet to get back on a track and feel the G forces in the turns. It’s been so long! Track takes no prisoners. ☠️ And I feel honored to be humbled by the one gear. ⚙️ Tomorrow I catch a 5am flight out to Gravel Nationals! Let’s see how the gravel legs are doing after the big move and track racing! Hope y’all are finding time to ride and finding peace while out riding. Cycling is a medicine for the soul and an elixir for the mind. And even for to see a bit of @ridewithnelly 🫡 by @you_know_inno
