175 years of music. Generations of Greenport memories. 🎶

The Greenport Band’s roots reach back to 1851, long before Mitchell Park became the waterfront gathering place we know today. Its Friday night concerts carry that history forward, giving neighbors and visitors a place to pull up a chair, enjoy the music, and spend an evening together.

That tradition has endured through the dedication of local musicians and community members, including Jerome “Jerry” McCarthy. A bass drummer and longtime champion of the band, Jerry helped shape concert programs, handled publicity, and set up chairs for the audience. His decades of service are honored with a plaque at Mitchell Park’s amphitheater.

It’s a reminder that cherished traditions continue because people show up for them.

At Friends of Mitchell Park, we celebrate the musicians, volunteers, and audiences who help keep this piece of Greenport’s history alive. The music belongs to our past, and the memories are still being made.

Have you spent a summer evening listening to the Greenport Band? Tell us who you shared it with.

FEATURED SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT | CROSS SOUND FERRY ⚓️

Connecting communities across the Sound, and keeping our maritime traditions moving.

We’re proud to welcome Cross Sound Ferry aboard as a Featured Sponsor of the 36th Annual Greenport Maritime Festival!

Just down the road from Greenport at Orient Point, Cross Sound Ferry connects the North Fork with New London, Connecticut, carrying passengers, families, commuters, visitors and vehicles across Long Island Sound every day.

For those of us who live out here, the ferry is such a familiar part of life on the East End, the sight of the boats crossing the Sound, the trip out to Orient, and that feeling of being connected by water to our neighbors across the way. Their fleet itself carries some incredible maritime history. Among their vessels is the Cape Henlopen, originally the USS LST-510, which served during the D-Day invasion at Normandy in 1944 before eventually beginning a new chapter carrying passengers across Long Island Sound.

Cross Sound Ferry also helps visitors experience and learn about our waters through their Lighthouse Cruises, sharing the stories of the lighthouses and maritime landmarks that have guided generations of vessels through this region. That makes their support of Maritime Festival especially meaningful.

This weekend is about celebrating a village whose identity has always been shaped by the water, the vessels that travel it, the people who work on it, and the maritime connections that continue to link our communities today.

A huge thank you to Cross Sound Ferry for coming aboard as a Featured Sponsor and helping us celebrate Greenport’s maritime past, present and future. 💙⚓️

At @discoverlongisland , we get to help people see this place with fresh eyes, even those who’ve called it home their whole lives. Sometimes that means taking the @longislandteapodcast out of the studio and onto the beach, with Fire Island Lighthouse behind us and a story worth showing up for.

Microphones on. Cameras rolling. Sand under our feet. Who shoots a podcast here? We do. 🎙️🌊

And as incredible as the backdrop is, what stays with me is the collaboration behind the camera: people working through the logistics, adapting when plans change, and making room for a creative idea to become something real. Getting to help bring that together, in a place like this, makes me proud to be part of Discover Long Island.

Filed under: reasons summer on Long Island is hard to leave behind.

Lavender at golden hour, warm air, and the kind of light that makes an ordinary evening feel a little more cinematic. No itinerary, no big production, just catching summer doing what it does best out East.

Some places you visit. Others make you want to stretch the day a little longer.

Consider this your reminder that some of Long Island’s best summer memories happen right before the sun disappears.

Some moments deserve a front row seat.

Congratulations to Brendan & Taylor on their engagement aboard @sailselina.ny last weekend in Shelter Island! What started as a beautiful day on the water turned into a moment they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.

Sail Selina II offers more than just a sail around Greenport Harbor, this 100 year old sailboat gives you a front row seat to incredible views, unforgettable memories, and, every once in a while, a life changing “yes.”

Congratulations to the newly engaged couple and cheers to the adventure ahead! 🥂
