Great Master Lưu Phú March 06, 1910 - August 24, 1971 (Lunar Calendar) Grandmaster Luu Phu was the head of Chau Ka in Vietnam. Today is 55 years since the passing of our teachers’ teacher. Yee Ying Tong is grateful to have learned from three of his indoor disciples: Lu Xuong Phat sifu, To Tu Cuong sifu, and Tran Le Ha sifu. It is an honor to continue Grandmaster Luu Phu’s art of Vietnamese Chau Ka kung fu and lion dance in Little Saigon, CA. by @yytnad
Great Master Chau Lung March 11, 1891 – July 7, 1919 (Lunar Calendar) Grandmaster Chau Lung was the founder of our Chau Ka kung fu. From a young age, he studied Hung Ka and Choy Ka and created what became known as Hung Tao Choy Mei — “head of Hung, tail of Choy”. This style, later called Chau Ka Kuen, was also well-known for incorporating Northern Siu Lum leg techniques. After dominating General Lee Fook Lum’s martial arts competition, Chau Lung was appointed chief instructor in Lum’s army. There, he trained and exchanged hands with martial artists from many styles, continuing to refine Chau Ka. The famous couplet displayed in many Chau Ka schools today was presented to him during this period. History passed down by our Grandmaster Luu Phu tells of Chau Lung’s sworn brother, Master Ching Wah, with whom he regularly trained. Through their exchanges, Chau Ka was further enriched with Wing Chun methods, including rattan-circle training. In Vietnam, Wing Chun is remembered as an important influence on Chau Ka. A few among Chau Lung’s students were Kwan Tak Hing, famous actor who portrayed Wong Fei Hung; Chan Dau, founder of Dau Pai; Kong On, of the Kong On Buk Sing Choy Lay Fut school; Mak Chin Ching, who later followed Wong Fei Hung; and our Grandmaster Luu Phu. Luu Phu trained under Chau Lung for about two years before Chau Lung passed away in 1919 at only 29 years old. After Chau Lung’s death, Chau Lung’s wife settled in Vietnam, and members of his family, including his grandson, were connected with Luu Phu’s schools. Luu Phu continued under and assisted Chau Hip and Chau Biu before bringing his Chau Ka to Vietnam in 1933, during a time of war in China when many traditional teachings were lost. Through difficulty, Chau Lung’s younger brothers continued developing the art in China, with Chau Ka becoming established in Hong Kong by 1936 and progressing strongly in the years that followed. Though Chau Ka schools today may preserve different forms and methods, we all trace our teachings back to the foundation created by Great Master Chau Lung. Chau Family Fist continues through generations around the world. by @yytnad
Great Master Chau Biu September 17, 1899 - March 14, 1961 (Lunar Calendar) On May 3rd, 1961, an elaborate and dignified memorial ceremony was held in Cho Lon, Vietnam for Grandmaster Chau Biu. All Vietnam Chau Ka schools gathered to mourn and pay their deepest respect to the head of Chau Ka. by @yytnad
