The Mechanics of Visual Reduction

The camera is a tool for translation, not just collection.

These two frames utilize the exact same physical methodology—Intentional Camera Movement (ICM)—to strip away three-dimensional detail and iron out urban clutter into raw, painterly bands of light, colour, and shadow.

Slide 1: “Paris in Autumn.” Captured deep within the Jardin des Tuileries. By pairing a slow shutter execution with a deliberate, smooth vertical sweep from bottom to top, the towering avenues of central Paris collapse into a fluid abstract canvas. The lines of the trees iron out into painterly textures, isolating a single, solitary subject trapped in a vertical slipstream of seasonal colour.

Slide 2: “Nottingham Market Square.” Shifting the exact same compositional technique onto our local pavements. Here, the wide, hard stone expanse of Old Market Square is compressed. The camera motion blurs the busy background noise of the city centre, transforming moving crowds into cinematic streaks and locking a lone, anonymous figure against the sweeping geometry of the environment.

The technique is universal. The geography is variable.

Less is More

The stage comes first.
Visual narrative isn’t bound by a single city or a specific zip code. Whether framing the historic geometry of Le Marais, Paris or tracking the raw light pockets of Nottingham, the method remains absolute.
Isolate the architectural lines first. Lock your exposure for the brightest highlights, let the shadows drop entirely into black ink—and wait for the environment’s natural rhythm to deliver the silhouette.
Returning to the grid. less is more.
