Zeina Arida has led Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art since late 2021, and her path to Doha runs through two decades of protecting the memory of the region.

Born in Beirut, she studied literature and theatre at the Sorbonne in Paris, graduating in 1993. She led the Arab Image Foundation, a photography preservation nonprofit she cofounded, from 1997 to 2014, then directed Beirut's Sursock Museum from 2014 to 2021. After the 2020 Beirut port explosion, she raised more than 2.5 million dollars to rebuild the building and restore its artworks. Qatar Museums named her director of Mathaf in November 2021, succeeding Abdellah Karroum.

She holds the French honour Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and sits on the board of MUCEM in Marseille, the advisory board of Darat al Funun in Amman, and the scientific committee of the Art Mill Museum in Doha. Mathaf holds more than 9,000 works of modern and contemporary Arab art.

تقود زينة عريضة المتحف العربي للفن الحديث "متحف" منذ أواخر عام 2021، ويمر طريقها إلى الدوحة عبر عقدين من حماية ذاكرة المنطقة.

وُلدت في بيروت، ودرست الأدب والمسرح في جامعة السوربون في باريس وتخرجت عام 1993. ترأست المؤسسة العربية للصورة، وهي مؤسسة غير ربحية لحفظ التراث الفوتوغرافي شاركت في تأسيسها، من 1997 إلى 2014، ثم أدارت متحف سرسق في بيروت من 2014 إلى 2021. وبعد انفجار مرفأ بيروت عام 2020، جمعت أكثر من 2.5 مليون دولار لإعادة بناء المبنى وترميم أعماله الفنية. وعيّنتها متاحف قطر مديرة لمتحف في نوفمبر 2021 خلفاً لعبد الله كروم.

وحصلت على وسام فارس الفنون والآداب الفرنسي، وهي عضو في مجلس إدارة MUCEM في مرسيليا، والمجلس الاستشاري لدارة الفنون في عمّان، واللجنة العلمية لمتحف Art Mill في الدوحة. ويضم متحف أكثر من 9,000 عمل من الفن العربي الحديث والمعاصر.

It has been 3 months+, and today was the last day of our exhibition “we refuse_d,” curated by Vasıf Kortun @vasif.kortun and Nadia Radwan @radwan4041 at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha.

“we refuse_d” brings together 15 artists whose practices explore refusal, endurance, and action—asking what it means to persist, resist, and create under conditions of silencing, censorship, and displacement. It has been such a tremendous honor to be participating in this exhibition among these incredible artists.
Artists: Jumana Manna, Baris Dogrusöz, Nour Shantout, Samia Halaby, Emily Jacir, Taysir Batniji, Yasmine Eid Sabbagh (with Tabara Korka Ndiaye and Ndeye Debo Seck), Khalil Rabah, Oraib Toukan, DAAR (Sandi Hilal, Alessandro Petti), Abdul Hay Mosallam Zarara, Majd Abdelhamid, Dima Srouji, Suha Shoman, and Walid Raad (with Pierre Huyghebaert).

Commissioned by @mathafmodern : For my work INTERSTICES (a dizzying array of combinations), I reimagined my 2018 installation composed of abstracted sculptures based on the form of pillboxes—structures with small apertures for weapons commonly found across Lebanon, Palestine, and conflict zones. These structures are specifically designed to be invisible or impenetrable, constructing the boundaries of access.
This serial presentation strips them of their original function, transforming them into diagrammatic civilian forms. For “we refuse_d,” the installation was expanded with newly produced sculptures informed by updated research and architectural military artifacts reflecting post-war developments in Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria.

She has spent her career asking what museums can be - as spaces for dialogue, resistance, memory, and imagination.

As Director of @mathafmodern, she has helped shape a home for modern and contemporary Arab art that doesn’t just preserve history, but questions it, expands it, and keeps it alive.

In a year marking Mathaf’s 15th anniversary, her work reminds us that culture evolves not by standing still, but by being brave enough to reflect, respond, and refuse when needed.

Interstices, a dizzying array of combinations (2025) is at @mathafmodern in an exhibition curated by the incredible @vasif.kortun & @radwan4041 called « we refuse_d » which brings together 15 artists whose practices explore refusal, endurance, and action - asking what it means to persist, resist, and create under conditions of silencing, censorship, and displacement.

For his work INTERSTICES (a dizzying array of combinations), Dogrusoz reimagined his installation Interstices, a dizzying array of combinations (2018), composed initially of 45 abstracted sculptures based on the form of pillboxes, with small apertures for weapons commonly found across Lebanon, Palestine, and conflict zones near sensitive targets like official buildings or interstitial sites like checkpoints. These structures are specifically designed to be invisible or impenetrable in their form while also constructing the boundaries or borders of access.
Dogrusöz’s serial presentation strips them of their original function, transforming them into diagrammatic civilian forms. For we refuse_d, the artist expanded the installation with newly produced sculptures, informed by updated research and architectural military artifacts that reflect post-war developments in Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria…
