Der Boss von Netflix sagt, das Kino ist tot. Ich sage: Sneak im Cosima. 🎬

Hingehen. 💙

Netflix says cinema is dead. I say: sneak preview at the Cosima. 🎬

Two people born in the same hospital, seconds apart. And a country that keeps getting in their way.

Saw A SAD AND BEAUTIFUL WORLD last night and it hasn’t left my head since. Cyril Aris’ debut balances love story and crisis chronicle so effortlessly that you’re grinning one minute and swallowing hard the next. Audience Award in Venice, Lebanon’s Oscar entry, 110 minutes of heart.

Every Cosima sneak is a blind date: one week the new Toy Story, the next a music film, then a Berlinale highlight. No pattern, no genre – just very good taste. Whoever is picking these: I will find out who you are. 🕵️‍♀️

In cinemas from today. Bring tissues.

Some days ago I watched The Odyssey in the breathtakingly beautiful Kino International. I’d been holding off after reading all those more negative reviews – but I was also curious for a more personal reason: my next song draws heavily on Homer’s tale, so I went in more eager (and a little anxious) than I might have otherwise. But more on that another time.

In the end, I had fun. It’s one of many literary adaptations, and on its own terms it’s completely entertaining.

The cast worked for me. I’d wished for a slightly edgier Odysseus – someone like Oscar Isaac, who can play cunning and weary and dangerous all at once, or a genuinely cold, unknowable Mads Mikkelsen, or Javier Bardem with his mythic, elemental menace. But in the end, Matt Damon did a good job.

Jon Bernthal as Menelaus maybe wasn‘t the perfect fit, still not sure about Anne Hathaway, and some of the costumes look a bit plastic – I’ll grant the critics that much – but Agamemnon was perfect.

The Circe episode and the interactions among the crew at sea were fantastic. A bit American, perhaps – but then, Nolan is an American director, and of course Europeans have every right to make their own adaptations, too. Oh, and what a spellbinding Siren’s episode …

And the visuals – that’s where the film really won me. The landscapes were breathtaking, sumptuous and painterly, worlds away from the chilly black-and-white of Oppenheimer that I never warmed to (for black-and-white done right, I’m counting the days until Pawlikowski’s next.)

Overall, I found it genuinely entertainingl Go to your local cinema, get Popcorn and travel to Ithaca.

I will never forget this evening! A filmfan’s dream came true: Meeting the best filmmaker of our time and be a part of the festival ceremony when he gets the Golden Honorary bear for his lifetime achievement! Another adorable filmmaker gave a personal and very touching overview of Scorsese’s career and a very funny anecdote about flat tires in America’s Monument valley: the great Wim Wenders, who Scorsese modestly praised for his amazing ‘Perfect days’ instead of talking of himself! What a movie lover and great human being! Also, he has a gorgeous daughter! What made me even more happy: Wenders curiously shares my favorite film of Scorsese: ‘King of Comedy’, which I couldn’t leave uncommented, so if you heard someone cheering at that moment, that was me 😂🎬Before the event it was also nice greeting two Hamburg film darlings, Fatih Akin (we shared the experience of watching Scorsese’s ‘Silence’ in a lovely Hamburg movie theater @studiokinohh - miss you guys here in Berlin) and Sibel Kekilli, who looked adorable! And then: The screening of the last Ballhaus movie! 🍿What an emotional night! @berlinale @martinscorsese_ @wimwendersfoundation @akin_fatih @sibelkekilli

Hint: Wim Wenders had something do with it! 🙃🎥

Sirat - my movie of 2025 and I’m calling it now.

Saw it last year in a beautiful cinema in Friedrichshain, walked in blind, walked out shaking. The adrenaline, the actors, the relentless intensity - it’s like Clouzot’s ‘Le Salaire de la peur’ (‘The Wages of fear’) reborn. That same nitroglycerine-truck tension riding your nerves for two hours straight.

The poster in the beautiful @kinozukunft promised it would blow your mind.

IT DOES.

I won’t spoil it. You need to experience this one raw.

It won the Jury Prize at Cannes, which is nice. But honestly? It deserves so much more. Oscar-level filmmaking that somehow flew under everyone’s radar.

While everyone’s talking about predictable sports dramas, Sirat is out here doing something genuinely visceral and unforgettable.

I don’t even know why I didn’t write about it afterwards. Maybe I was too shaken.

WATCH THAT MOVIE. 🍿

10/10
