Context: Went to a friend’s wedding and I’ve been wanting to wear this dress since New Year’s and finally had the opportunity to wear it ٩( ᐛ )و. I styled it with my gloves and did a mini photoshoot until I realized I looked like Lust! This was unplanned but turned out to be amazing bc why am I practically doing the same pose as her 😂. Brought me back to when I was a kid watching FMA at my cousin’s house in their cool basement with my older brother. I was like 10 and remember the first episode getting me kinda spooked but I still enjoyed watching it with them. Then continued watching it at home with my brother bc I would always hear this song playing in his room and I’d walk in and just sit there with him😆.

But why is it like this though?! 😂😮‍💨😫

The second you start posting your mermaid self, the people who TRULY know you are like, “Yup, that tracks.” 😂 It’s the people who CLAIM they know you that suddenly start looking at you sideways like you’ve lost your mind and asking:

“Whats wrong with you?”
“Why are you doing that?”
“Aren’t you too old for that?”

Meanwhile complete strangers are over here like:

“YOU LOOK MERMAZING!”
“Where did you get your tail?!”
“Live your best life!”

And honestly? I think part of it is because freedom makes people uncomfortable.

Not mermaids.

Freedom. 💯

Some people get nervous when they see someone step outside the box THEY ACCEPTED FOR THEMSELVES. When they see someone choosing JOY ON PURPOSE. Choosing childlike wonder on purpose. Choosing themselves on purpose.

For me, being a mermaid isn’t pretending to be something I’m not.

It’s the opposite.

It’s being MORE of who I’ve always been.

A vampire fairy mermaid, thank you very much. 🧛🏾‍♀️🧚🏾🧜🏾‍♀️💅🏾

The older I get, the more I realize self-care isn’t always bubble baths and spa days. Sometimes self-care is unapologetically doing the thing that makes your soul light up. ✨

Sometimes it’s putting on a tail.

Sometimes it’s frolicking.

Sometimes it’s painting.

Sometimes it’s gardening.

Whatever it is, make time for it.

Because a happy parent is a better parent.
A happy auntie or uncle is a better one.
A happy human is a better (less judgmental) human.

You can’t pour from an empty shell. 🐚

The world teaches us to sacrifice ourselves until there’s nothing left. 😒

I disagree.

Put your mask on first.

Take care of yourself in the middle of the storm.

The people who love you deserve the happiest version of you.

And if that version happens to have fins… even better. 💜
