Delivering the biggest upset of IPF worlds, Ziana Azariah entered the IPF world championships as a heavy underdog in the 84kg class.

Heading into the competition, fewer than 0.1% believed she could win. Yet the Brit pulled off an upset victory with a world record pull.

After making her Sheffield debut in January as a late reserve, Azariah returns with the benefit of a full prep. Can she continue to add kilos to her total on the sport’s biggest stage?

IPF Open Worlds 2026 🇱🇹

Over a week on and it’s still not really sunk in. I’m a World Champion. Not something I thought I’d be writing after this Championships but that’s what makes it even more special.

I hope this reminds people to enjoy the process, stay in your lane and keep turning up for you because you never know what will happen. Powerlifting is a funny old sport where nothing is given or guaranteed, you’ve got to love the process no matter where it takes you and I really do.

Thank you Sam @dualstrengthcoaching for being in my corner these last 5 years, having a coach like you is a blessing. Thank you @christianthecoach for helping Big Zi not get too big sitting through my sauna cut every time. Thank you @atsapproved and @anniebananny_ for being in my corner on the day and keeping me blissfully unaware of what was going on with the scoreboard. Thank you to @debbiedomoney for keeping me in one piece this prep. Thank you @progressgym for providing a facility where I can push myself to be the best I can be. Thank you to my Team GB family @gbpowerfed , our team is so special and I treasure every minute spent with you guys. Thank you to my people at home for being so understanding and supportive, powerlifting can be a selfish sport at times and it takes a village to get me on to the platform.

Thank you for all the kind messages of congratulations and support. The amount of love I’ve received has honestly been overwhelming but so, so appreciated.

See you at Sheffield.

Everything changed for the 84kg class when it emerged that six time world champion Amanda Lawrence USA, who has dominated this class for years, would not be in attendance to defend her title.

Karlina Tongotea NZL had moved up from the 76s and was nominated in first place. However, things started to go awry for Karlina almost immediately. Her opening squat at 215kg was super quick but turned down on depth and she had to re-take it. She went up to 227.5kg on her third but lost balance with it half way up.

Ziana Azariah GBR was on a mission though and she took the gold medal with a solid 227.5kg squat.

SQUAT RESULTS

🥇 Ziana Azariah GBR - 227.5kg
🥈 Jessica Buettner CAN - 225kg
🥉 Kristín Þórhallsdóttir ISL - 225kg

Things went better for Karlina on bench and she hit three good lifts here, taking the bench gold with a new PB at 137.5kg. This put her in a fragile lead, on bodyweight ahead Nicolette Zeigler USA and 2.5kg in front of Ziana.

BENCH RESULTS

🥇 Karlina Tongotea NZL - 137.5kg
🥈 Emilie Mouchet FRA - 135kg
🥉 Nicolette Zeigler USA - 130kg

Nicolette missed her deadlift opener and had to re-take it, costing her valuable kilos. Meanwhile, Ziana pulled an easy looking 260kg on her second to move ahead of Karlina.

With the world title on the table, Karlina attempted 265kg but it was just too big an ask. And it wouldn’t have changed the placings anyway as Ziana smashed her own open world record with a 270kg deadlift.

DEADLIFT RESULTS

🥇 Ziana Azariah GBR - 270kg - Open world record
🥈 Marina Almeida BRA - 262.5kg
🥉 Karlina Tongotea NZL - 255kg

Huge congratulations to Ziana Azariah on her first world title and auto qualifying for Sheffield. by @zianatheepowerlifter
