Yesterday, Hackney chose hope 💚

Hope for better housing and services.
Hope for thriving local economies.
Hope for people-powered democracy.

Thank you for trusting me to be your Mayor. I will work every day, with my incredible team of 40 (!) councillors to fix what’s broken, get the basics right and make Hackney a place you can afford to stay.

And thank you to the whole team of candidates, staff and volunteers who helped build this victory.

Today, a journalist asked me how I felt about now having to deliver on the manifesto we ran this campaign on.

I told them I can’t wait to get started.

Today, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released its latest figures on drug deaths in England and Wales, revealing the latest extent of this public health crisis: 5,519 people died in 2025 due to drug use, a reduction of less than 1 per cent from last year.

As Mayor of Hackney, and after spending over a decade working in public health, I know these numbers on a page represent far more than statistics; they are parents, someone’s child, friends, neighbours. Behind every death are loved ones left grieving and a community left asking why nothing is changing.

We cannot police our way out of a public health crisis. We are putting a modern, compassionate, and evidence-led policy approach on Burnham’s desk, as lives continue to be put on the line.

Today, the ONS has released its latest figures on drug deaths. What it shows is a public health crisis: 518 Londoners died from drug use in 2025, and 5,519 died across England and Wales.

These statistics are not just numbers – behind every death are loved ones left grieving, and a community left asking why nothing is changing.

Across our six boroughs, we are ready to act. All we need is for the Home Office to stop blocking us from making vital interventions, and let us bring about measures that would save lives and turn around this public health emergency. by @zoegarbettgreen

Had the most wonderful afternoon at the lovely @stmarysgarden harvest open day. Met so many fab volunteers (thanks for my lovely cup of tea!). 👏 was lovely to attend with two Haggerston Green cllrs @chazwut @mac_shivers @haggerstongreens & @gemmaper_bo one of our De Beauvoir Green cllrs plus other friendly Greens!

This space is so loved by neighbours & the community who have fought & worked to keep it open. Great to here the support from @hackneycityfarm_official to help the garden to grow.

The garden is open 10 - 4 on Wednesdays & Thursdays - do go along, all welcome. 🌱 by @zoegarbettgreen

NEW COUNCIL HOMES COMING SOON

We’re building 172 new homes in Clapton, Hoxton and Stoke Newington.

Hackney needs more council homes and we’re getting spades in the ground across the borough.

But there are thousands of people who don’t have a safe and secure place to call home, and we could build so many more with the right funding from the government.

Last night, I joined unions and community groups to demand an end to austerity.

Hackney residents feel the harm of underinvestment and underfunded services every day. Meanwhile, Labour does nothing but tinker around the edges. Today’s budget is no different.

It’s my job to stand up for the people of Hackney and demand the funding our residents deserve. Thank you to everyone who supported that fight by joining the march. We won’t rest until we see change. by @zoegarbettgreen

So, I’ve just watched the Chancellor’s budget statement.

Whatever claims of ending neoliberalism the Prime Minister once made, this is a budget that leaves austerity ripping up our communities, underfunding our services and outsourcing costs to our residents.

As the Chancellor spoke, gambling and banking stocks rose in value.

Meanwhile, he said nothing about renters; nothing about restoring local government finances; and nothing about the climate crisis.

Our communities need real funding and real change now.

It’s clear that the Prime Minister will not step up to help. Here in Hackney we’ll keep fighting & getting the most for residents every day. by @zoegarbettgreen

Austerity is not an economic necessity. It is a political choice that protects wealth and punishes working-class communities.

Our councils are being forced to manage decline while the government refuses to confront the concentration of wealth and power at the heart of this crisis.

We don’t need another budget that shifts the burden onto those already struggling. We need an end to austerity, redistribution of wealth, investment in public services and a fundamental transformation of an economic system that puts profit before people.

Solidarity with everyone on the streets tonight demanding not just more funding, but systemic change. 💚✊ by @zoegarbettgreen

@hackneycouncil’s Anti-Austerity Summit (9th September 2026), bringing together council leaders, councillors, trade unions, campaigners and organisations working directly with communities affected by underfunding, cuts and the immense growing pressure on public services. by @zoegarbettgreen

Welcome to Hackney Fixing Factory!!

It was a pleasure to be able to welcome the new Mayor of Hackney @zoegarbettgreen and Councillors @hackneycable , and @florschech down to the Fixing Factory last month.

We discussed how valuable the Fixing Factory is to the local community and even gave them a demo of our soldering workshops.

In Hackney we run a weekly programme of activities including FREE repair sessions, workshops, repair clubs, courses, and more. This is all possible because of our amazing group of volunteers!

We are located on Dispensary Lane so please pop in if you want to find out more, or take a look on our website (link in bio).
