💷 Made £100k profit… so why is there no cash in the bank?

One of the biggest frustrations we see in construction.
Here are 4 common reasons:
🔹 CIS deductions can show as profit, but the cash hasn’t hit your bank. File early, reconcile everything and chase HMRC for repayments.
🔹 Expansion vans, tools and equipment can take £50k+ out of the bank, without reducing profit.
🔹 Debtors the work is complete and profit is recorded, but you’re still waiting to be paid. Tighten terms and chase early.
🔹 Dividends money taken personally reduces cash, not profit.

The key? Understand why your cash is low, fix the cause, and remove the stress. 📊💰

Our view on company vehicles is simple…. make sure it makes sense as a business decision, not just because it saves tax.

If you can genuinely justify a van for the business and keep the private use within the rules, HP is normally the best option. You can potentially get tax relief on the full cost upfront, despite only paying a deposit and monthly payments. Good for tax, good for cashflow, and you can buy a cheaper second-hand van and still get the tax benefits.

If you want private use, I’d be looking at an electric van or car depending on what suits you. The BIK on an electric car is still very low and currently £0 on an electric van.

We usually recommend to lease the EV rather than buy it. Not because buying is bad for tax, the tax relief can actually be great, but because EVs can drop in value so quickly. There’s no point saving £5k in tax if you lose £15k on the value of the car.

Decide on what vehicles work best for you and your business, look at the tax saving, the monthly cashflow and what the vehicle is likely to be worth when you’re finished with it. Then get your accountant to run the numbers properly and work out what actually leaves you and your business better off 👍🏼 by @zp_accountants

🚨 OWN MORE THAN ONE COMPANY?
Property investors often overlook the associated company rules 👀

If you control multiple companies, the £50,000 Corporation Tax lower-rate threshold can be divided between them.

🏢 3 companies = roughly £16,667 each
So a company making £50,000 profit may not simply pay 19% Corporation Tax.

💡 The takeaway: don’t create additional companies without considering the tax implications.
Keep structures simple where possible and get professional advice before setting up extra SPVs.

Want to optimise your health like Bryan Johnson and save tax?
If you run a limited company, HMRC allows one health screening or medical check-up per employee/director each tax year tax-free.

✅ No Benefit in Kind
✅ No Income Tax
✅ No Employer NI
✅ No P11D

A £1,000 preventative health check can save around £750 compared with paying personally (depending on your tax position).

⚠️ This applies to preventative screening only not ongoing treatment, private medical insurance, or cosmetic procedures.

🚨 Thinking of buying a Ford Ranger through your limited company?

From April 2025, most pickups are treated as cars, not vans, for tax purposes.

⚠️ That means:
• Higher 🚗 Benefit in Kind (BIK) if it’s available for private use
• Capital allowances may drop from 100% upfront to just 18% (or 6%) per year
• A £50k Ranger could cost around £14k–£15k more in year one.

✅ Bought or leased before April 2025? You’re protected until 5 April 2029.

Now is the time to plan before the new BIK rules apply.

Follow us for practical tax tips and avoid paying more tax than you need to. 💼

💰 Pull £75,000 from a property with zero tax?

It’s called refinancing.

Buy at £100k, property grows to £200k, then refinance at 75% LTV. After repaying the original loan, you could have £75k cash and it’s not taxable because you’ve borrowed, not sold.

⚠️ But remember: when you eventually sell, your capital gains tax is still based on the original purchase price, not the refinanced value.

Refinancing can help you scale but always plan your exit. 📈

💡 Limited company owners with children: you could save £3,500+ in tax each year.

Children aged 13+ can legally work in your business (subject to employment rules on hours and duties). If the work is genuine and paid at a commercial rate, their wages are usually covered by their personal allowance.

📌 Example:
• Pay your child £6,000 per year
• No income tax for them
• Your company receives a corporation tax deduction worth up to £1,500

Compared with taking the money as profits and dividends, the overall family tax saving can exceed £3,500 per year even more for higher-rate taxpayers.
⚠️ The work must be real, necessary, and paid at market value.
