POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
THANK YOU Kerry Cardoza (@booksnotboyz) for spending so much time on writing about Thomas Kong’s work and how the community is helping to preserve his work. Aaaaand putting his work on the cover of the Chicago Reader! (@chicago_reader)

A group of artist friends and I have archived around 2200 pieces of Thomas’ work but they are not available online yet. However, we built a website for the archive and the estate, and you will be able to get a sense of what we are doing. You can also see the 3D Scan of Kim’s Corner Food as well if you are not familiar with the store and Thomas Kong! Thank you, Andrea (@qndred) for scanning the store in 2023.

If you want to see the works in person, please email us directly at info@062official.com. Shout out to all my friends and the community members who have been involved.🫰🏼Can’t believe this is coming together!

New issue drop!

On the cover: ‘I want people to be happy, seeing my artwork.’

We are thrilled to present Sungho Bae (@baesungho_) at the Barely Fair (@barely_fair) this year!

Sungho Bae reinterprets the visual domain, strategically engaging consumption through images of latent or explicit violence sourced from the physical perceptions embedded in everyday life, mass media, and consumer products. Considering humans as mutants continually adapting within these visual territories, his practice navigates the mechanisms of image-making and the processing of superficial consumption data. By collecting and repurposing imagery and forms, Bae employs strategies of physical and contextual reduction, exaggeration, repetition, and deliberate recontextualization. His work displaces accumulated visual information from its intended contexts, scrutinizing traces of fragmentation revealed on material surfaces. Through reconstructive fragmentation, Bae exposes hidden instabilities within visual narratives, suggesting new modes of relation between human and non-human entities.

Sungho Bae received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his BFA from Seoul National University. He has exhibited at venues including Cylinder Gallery, Seoul, South Korea; Daejeon Museum of Art, Daejeon, South Korea; Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago, IL; Root & Culture, Chicago, IL; and Casemore Gallery, San Francisco, CA. He has participated in residency programs such as RAIR, Philadelphia; Wassaic Project, Wassaic, NY; Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT; and HATCH Residency, Chicago, IL.

Guanyu Xu’s ‘Resident Aliens’, part of our current show 𝘊𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘨𝘰 curated by @062official.

‘Resident Aliens’ presents physical photographic installations within immigrants’ interior spaces to examine their personal histories and complex experiences. Through photographing the layered images of immigrants’ interior spaces, belongings, personal photo archives, and pictures of places they captured in this world, the project blurs the boundaries between the familiar and foreignness, private and public, belonging and alienation. “Resident Aliens” is particularly meaningful when we face the rise of neo-nationalism and xenophobia across the globe.

On view @casemoregallery through November 9.

Join us for the opening of ‘Chicago’, curated by S.Y. Lim @062official, at Casemore Gallery this Saturday 28 September 5 -7 ✨

Thomas Kong adorned his entire convenience store with mini installations of his collage and assemblage works, all created from the same advertising and packaging materials as the store products.

Kong began collaging in 2014, almost on a whim. He had an idea to embellish the shop shelves to bring some humor and color into the store: “I thought it was decoration, interior design. It looked good,” he told Borderless Magazine. “Then I had an idea to cut different paper shapes and use different colours, and I started putting them on the windows, the walls, outdoors, and the store looked a little better. The customers said it looked nice. They said it was beautiful, kind of unusual.”

Kong continued to make these works from 8am—8pm every day until his passing in 2023. Now, we are celebrating the prolific artist with an installation of his works alongside four Chicago-based artists that had close relationships to him and his work: Sungho Bae, Efrat Hakimi, Ed Oh and Guanyu Xu. by @062official

CHICAGO: OPENING SATURDAY 28 SEPTEMBER

We are thrilled to partner with Chicago-based gallery 062 to present 𝘊𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘨𝘰, an exhibition of works from artists Sungho Bae, Efrat Hakimi, Thomas Kong, Ed Oh and Guanyu Xu.

Originally conceived as a solo show of Thomas Kong’s work, his passing in 2023 led to a more expansive approach, reflecting and celebrating his place within Chicago’s growing and tight-knit community of artists and artist-run spaces.

Thomas Kong was a prolific self-taught artist and an important figure in Chicago’s AAPI community, where he operated Kim’s Corner Food, a locally venerated convenience store in the Rogers Park neighborhood. Over 17 years, Kong created and displayed a massive and always-evolving volume of work during the many hours and days he spent at the store. The collages and assemblage pieces he made from repurposed advertising and inventory packaging reflected an uncanny sense of humor and optimism, with many incorporating his signature “Be Happy” stickers.

062 presents 𝑹𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒔 𝑲𝒐𝒏𝒈, a pop-up exhibition of Thomas Kong (@thomaskkong) (January 16, 1950 – May 1, 2023) at BARELY FAIR (@barely_fair). At Barely Fair, 062 will present the work of Thomas Kong that was mailed to the gallerist S.Y. Lim during the pandemic. Recent acquisitions of the artist’s works includes 2000 pieces by Kohler Foundation.

Tickets for vernissage are $10, and can be bought online through EventBrite or be purchased at the door. To schedule a visit, please e-mail contact.juliuscaesar(at)gmail.com

TENGGER (텐거/天郷) (@Tenggerland) is coming to Chicago in TWO DAYS! At Co-Prosperity (@coprosperitychicago ) on March 20, TENGGER will present two video pieces. One of the videos features works that they created during their Shikoku Pilgrimage. The door opens at 7:00 PM on Wednesday and we highly recommend arriving early. See you soon! Below is a note from TENGGER.

“TENGGER has done the Shikoku Pilgrimage 3 times. Shikoku is one of the big 4 islands in Japan. There are lots of Buddhist Temples on this island, with 1200 years old pilgrimage history.

There are many miniature sculptures or symbolic items of the Shikoku Pilgrimage on the road, on some small mountain, and inside several temples.

Those are for the people who want to be on the pilgrim but cannot do it because of health issues or economic reasons. People call it Mini-Shikoku.
We learned about the Mini-Shikoku during the 1st pilgrimage in 2014 and decided to express it with sound and visuals. We did field recordings and filmed at 108 temples intensified all the sound layers from 108 temples into one WAV file, and installed on the road of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Then we released these tracks online to listeners and people could download them free, as ‘Osettai‘(present for Pilgrims from Shikoku people).

MINISHIKO 映像編 is the condensed of 108 Temple videos. Also filmed on the way of the pilgrimage, and created this video “MUSIC and Pilgrimage”.” -TENGGER #TENGGER #텐거 #시카고

Announcing a new FREE concert! 🎫 Co-Prosperity in collaboration with 062 (@062official) is thrilled to present TENGGER (@Tenggerland)

Kikù Hibino (@kiku.hibino) will be opening the night and this concert is FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Please join us on March 20, 2024. Doors open at 7:00 PM.

TENGGER is a traveling musical family, made up of Pan-Asian couple ITTA (from South Korea) and MARQIDO (from Japan), who create their brand of psychedelic New-Age drone magic through the use of voice, Indian harmonium, and toy instruments (played by ITTA), and synths and electronics (played by MARQIDO). The duo originally started out with the moniker “10,” but since the birth of their son RAAI (who joins them on tour and playing voice, synth, toy instruments, and dance performance on stage) in 2012, have called themselves TENGGER (meaning ‘unlimited expanse of sky’ in Mongolian) to mark the expansion of the family. It also means ‘huge sea’ in Hungarian. Travel, as a spiritual experience in real environments, and the sound between the space and the audience have been central themes of their works. The family’s yearly pilgrimages inform every aspect of their art.

Sound artist Kikù Hibino has dedicated his career to exploring the complex interplay between nature’s inherent structures and the human imagination through electronic music. Inspired by the intricate beauty of human languages, natural patterns, optical illusions and moirés, Kikù crafts electronic compositions that challenge traditional rhythmic structures and melodies, inviting listeners into a world where linear and non-linear converge harmoniously.
