Walk & rant with me. I asked captains & chief officers what courses they actually want from green deckhands. This is what they said…

Essentials:
STCW - safety training week
Powerboat Level 2 - tender license
ENG1 - medical cert

Nice to haves / boat dependent:
PWC, PDSD, diving certs, Day Skipper, Yachtmaster, AEC 1&2, any watersports/instructor qual, driving licence.

VHF is in the middle, I personally think it’s pointless but a couple of captains said it was good to have.

Pointless at this stage of your career:
Radar

Really fucking stupid:
Barista, superyacht deckhand course, advanced deckhand course, efficient deckhand theory.

My Tuesdays used to consist of a packed tube, back to back Teams calls & a very average meal deal at my desk.

I started as a green deckhand & after two years, I got promoted to Bosun. I’ve spent an incredible seven and a half years on deck - leading, hiring, managing and learning from deck teams.

Sometimes it’s scrubbing teak all day. Sometimes it’s driving tenders. Sometimes it’s washing the boat or polishing stainless till you can see your face in it.

& sometimes, it’s diving the famous Pablo Escobar plane wreck with the guests.

It’s not all seabobs and sunsets. The days are long & the work is hard. But I don’t know about you, I’ve never once looked at the crystal blue Bahamas water and wished I was back at my desk.

This is what the Caribbean season looks like & boats are hiring for it right now.

The Stateside Academy is how I help you get there.

It’s a small group working closely with me for 4 weeks, it’s intense & it’s personal. You’ll learn exactly how captains & recruiters think, so you understand why your CV gets read or ignored. Then we put it into action. Every week, you’re building your actual CV, cover letter and job-hunting plan, with me guiding you, giving feedback & keeping you on track the whole way.

The first Stateside Academy cohort is complete 💫 & it shows just how much prep goes into turning up to a yachting hub like Fort Lauderdale ready to get hired.

Most people land with a few certs & just hope for the best. This group are heading out with a CV captains will actually read, a cover letter that stands out, interview prep, a solid game plan & me in their corner. I’m so excited to see how they get on when they start applying over the next few weeks.

SO…. I’m opening the doors again & this time you don’t need to be legal to work in the US. A few of my clients have recently got their B1/B2 visas approved. I can’t promise you’ll get one, but I’ll give you the tools and the insight to give yourself the best shot.
