Meet Madison Symone: Your New Favourite Artist 📁

Madison Symone is a New York-bred artist reimagining Black culture on her sprawling canvas. @theculturecrypt has been a fan of @1.madi’s work for some time, featuring a few of her pieces (like her rendition of Sade’s Love Deluxe artwork) in our debut print issue back in 2024. But let’s learn more about the mind behind the masterpieces.

Hailing from Westchester, just outside the city, Symone has been creating for as long as she can remember. Although she started painting in 2015 after moving away from a lifelong focus on fashion illustration, the shift wasn’t born from careful planning. “I got bored,” she laughs. After experimenting with acrylic, gouache and watercolour, it was oil paint that ultimately clicked for her.

Symone’s work today is free-form and difficult to categorise, but someone once described it as falling somewhere between impressionism and dreamy expressionism: a description she has since embraced. So far, she’s been able to give some of pop culture’s most memorable moments and iconic scenes a soft, almost tranquil feel.

“The Amerie piece was so personal for me. People tell me that the faceless work lets them put themselves in the subject’s shoes and feel represented,” Madi said, speaking in-depth about some of her most iconic pieces. “I often lie down and watch the sun through the window, so her pose and the environment really felt like me. I absolutely love that piece—especially capturing the light, her mood, and the way the light affected everything around her.

Painting is literally my therapy, and it’s one of the few things that keeps me so grounded. Naturally, I just cannot be unproductive so it’s easy for me to remain disciplined and just work.

The Zhané piece had been sitting in my folder for a while, and I was so excited to create it because I feel like they do not get enough credit for their craft and what they’ve created. It was a simple black and white piece, but those reflections of the gold to represent the light just added an extra layer for me and I really wanted to make it beautiful to honour them.”

in january i took a leap of faith and decided to quit my job and pursue my career in art full time. yesterday made 6 months to the day of my first day home, and i’m beyond proud of myself. no handouts, no shortcuts - simply hard work, a lot of sacrifice, dedication and commitment to my craft. i’ve supported myself and i’ve worked diligently to build my foundation, and the journey hasn’t been easy but it’s been more than worth it. blood, sweat and tears (literally), so many late nights and early mornings, days at a time without sleep, sometimes not even a meal! it’s been slow, it’s been super busy, and there’s been so many ups and downs throughout. brainstorming, handling online orders, commissions, and then my own projects, no team - just me! but my journey is my journey and i wouldn’t change a thing at all. i’m beyond grateful for every single moment, and i’ve learned so much about myself and life in general in the process. every single order, every painting, every word of encouragement, (THANK Y’ALL 🤍) it’s given me confirmation that i am on the right path, and it’s strengthened my belief in self immensely. i’m just getting started and have a long way to go, and i’m so excited to see what the future holds. but i know it’s going to be GREAT. 🥰🪄🌟🤍 by @1.madi
