When #soniasotomayor dissented on the #supremecourt ruling allowing, in essence, racial profiling of Latinos, I thought of our parents generation who endured great struggle before they were even teenagers (thx, colonialism!) No jodas, Puerto Ricans have long known the violent sting of colonialism and prejudice. But as the #wiselatina from #soundview #bronx knows, #boricuas have always been presente in the fight for dignity and respect for all. The foto shows my #jibaro #abuelo and #abuela outside their home in #caguas #puertorico in the #1930s. My father is at bottom right. Our family was hardly unique. So of course Sonia knows this is not some abstraction. Happy to announce the acquisition of a ten-print portfolio of my vintage work by the @museumofcityny.The timing couldn’t be better: One year ago I left @nytimes to devote myself to my photography. Forty six years ago next week, I took my foto of Dancers in Mott Haven. Now, the Museum has acquired a 2 x 3 foot print of it as well as 9 other 11 x 14 black and white images. The Museum is the perfect home for these prints, considering its holdings of classic NYC photos. Personally, I’d love to see the Dancers alongside Eisenstadt’s Times Square Kiss, since comparisons have been made for a while. I’ll put my money on mine, since the SBX kiss embodies the tenderness, love and culture that get us through hard times like the 1970s Bronx. Oh, and mine shows consent.Deep thanks to the Museum of the City of New York and especially @scorcoran74 for making this happen. Now this is a nice surprise: after her old wall was buffed a few years ago, a new #memorialwall #wip honoring #jessicaguzmán the 10-year-old murdered in 1990 by lunatic lothario and #psychokiller Alejandro Henríquez. Her story was the first time @angelfranco_nyt and I teamed up at Ye Olde Jute Mill™️the first of many Bronxarican collabs. Jessica would be 45 now. May she never be forgotten. by @104bx
