Charles Gigglesworth (2010-2024)

Today the good ginger boy took his final nap, peacefully after a brief age-related illness.

Charlie was fourteen, and it was a blessing to know him for more than half his life. I didn’t meet him till 2015 when Sam and I first started dating, and it took a while for him to warm up to me, but I think I fell in love the first time he pounced on me. He still had such crazy puppy-like energy even at five years old. Though he slowed down a bit in the last year or two, he never lost that OG enthusiasm, not even at his ripe old age.

He was a bat eared little goblin when I met him, and a snuggly and affectionate little fur baby. I have so many photos of him on his back or side, legs up in the air, doing his best hairy jellybean impression.

If you knew him, you knew he could be obstinate, grumpy and bitey too. One time, after his nightly ablutions at the park on the corner, he took off without me, trotting all the way home as I raced to clean up after him. He didn’t care what I was doing, he knew where he was going so off he charged. Another time, when we were renovating Penrith, he took himself out the open front door and off down the street. No idea where he was headed, but he was at least 200m down the road by the time we noticed. He was unbothered, in his lane, flourishing. Peeing and sniffing. He came back reluctantly.

I didn’t grow up with dogs, and so Charlie was the first I ever lived with. He was the dog who convinced me how good they are too. They come into our lives and put all these annoying demands and responsibilities on us - food, walks, attention, scratches, baths, flea treatments, vet visits - but they also teach us a little about how deep love goes.

I look back on the times I grumbled over taking him for a walk, or deflected his attempts to play, and just think “what on earth was I doing? What was so important?” What I wouldn’t give now for just one more walk, one more go at the park tossing a ball, one more belly rub. I was lucky to get to see him last weekend for a final time, and he was so excited. Old man Charles.

Mike Skinner of The Streets spent a lot of time in the audience last night. After 20+ years in the music industry, I guess he’s had enough of the impersonal performer/audience relationship that is traditional, and wants a more direct experience with, or for, fans. It tracks with his very genuine and emotional approach to music which has always been extraordinarily raw and honest, and probably quite hard on him given the attention he’s had over the years. It’s so interesting and encouraging to see someone still asking the hard questions of themselves and their artistry twenty years on. taken in Margaret Court Arena by @10rdben
