Your characters aren’t a cast list. They’re a disaster waiting to happen.😂

You can know their names.

Their hair colour.

Their favourite food.

Their tragic childhoods.

And still have absolutely no idea what happens when you put them in a room together.

That’s where a character map comes in. 👀

If you’re staring at your WIP thinking, “”I have absolutely no idea where this is going””, try working backwards.

The trick is not to start with:

“What happens first?”

Start with:

“Who is my character when this story is over?”

Then work backwards from there.

What were they like before?
What made them change?
What pushed them into action?
What did they think they wanted?
What strength did they have to discover?
What knocked them off course?
And what finally forced them to let go of control?

Suddenly, your plot starts having somewhere to go.

This is based on E. A. Deverell’s One Page Novel method: eight prompts designed to help you map the story in planning order, not scene order.

Save this for the next time your WIP has officially become a pile of ✨things that happen✨.

A writer’s brain is already chaotic
Characters with complicated childhoods.
Three different timelines.
A magic system that somehow needs to make sense.
A plot hole you’ve been pretending doesn’t exist.
A scene you forgot to finish.
And approximately 14 completely unrelated ideas that showed up at 2 a.m.

So maybe your desk doesn’t need to add to the chaos. 😂

Sometimes a cluttered workspace just makes an already-overloaded brain feel even louder.

So here’s your reminder:

Clear the desk.
Put away the notes you don’t need right now.
Throw away the coffee cups.
Find the pen you’ve been looking for all week.

Then sit down with a clean space and a fresh page.

You don’t have to figure out the whole story today.

Just give your brain somewhere quiet to put the next few words. ✍️📖

Be honest: is your writing desk currently helping your brain… or is it another plot you’re trying to keep track of?

Too many ideas and absolutely no idea where to start?

Classic!!

So we raided the craft of five writers who knew a thing or two about getting words onto a page.

Not saying you need to write like them.

Please don’t suddenly start trying to write ‘War and Peace’.

But there’s something useful to steal from each:

📚 Rowling — give your chaos a structure.
🧊 Hemingway — know more than you say.
🌀 Woolf — follow the thought and see where it takes you.
🔗 Tolstoy — make your characters’ lives collide.
📝 Fitzgerald — collect the weird little things you notice.

The best writing advice isn’t always about finding your way of writing.

Sometimes it’s about trying someone else’s method until something clicks.

So if your next draft is currently staring at you like a disappointed parent…

Start here. 👀

Stuck on a scene?

Go find the part of a book you’re absolutely obsessed with.

Not to copy it.

Just… aggressively borrow the “”vibe””. 😂

What made that scene work?

The tension?
The banter?
The way the characters looked at each other?
The pacing?
The fact that someone was probably one bad decision away from disaster?

Figure out what made you love it.

Then take that feeling and throw it at your own characters.

Different world.
Different characters.
Different plot.

Sometimes the best way out of writer’s block is remembering what made you fall in love with books in the first place. 📖

Having a long TBR has so many benefits.

Like…

You never have to wonder what to read next.
You simply stare at your bookshelf in complete panic.

You have a book for every mood.
Sad? Book.
Happy? Book.
Existential crisis? Book.
Want to disappear from reality for 6 hours? Several books, actually.

And our personal favourite:

Someone recommends a book; you can say,
“Oh, already have that one!”

Because obviously we do.

Have we read it?

Absolutely not.

Is it on our TBR?

Since 2022.

Are we going to buy another book today?

Mind your own business. 📚
