The beautiful Tenaya Lake! What better way to cap off a quick trip to Yosemite than by stargazing? The lake is known for its still waters, with stars reflecting on the water ... but not tonight. It was windy, and the lake was active. Still, I thanked my lucky stars for clear skies. It was a little past 11 pm, and the Milky Way had begun its descent toward the horizon; only part of its core was visible here. It was still a good outing, nonetheless. We had been at Mono Lake a few hours earlier, and we didn't think we'd make it here in time. But we did ... barely! And just like that, she started to descend and disappear into the horizon. That reminds me of a song—"Say Hello and Wave Goodbye" by Soft Cell.

The last weekend of summer, sitting by a shade with the best view of El Capitan, Sentinel Rock, and Cathedral Rocks by Merced River — all in one sitting. Looks like the leaves are turning, getting ready for fall!

Under the constellation Cygnus, the North America Nebula glows above a quiet red tent. Not a bad setup for a night under the stars.

Happy 136th (Belated) Birthday, Yosemite! On October 1, 1890, the U.S. Congress created Yosemite National Park, making it the 3rd National Park in the U.S.

Cygnus was right above our campsite, and @sand_500 told us to "look up." I couldn't believe it, but after several squints, I saw it!! Sandeep's legendary 20/20 vision has done it again! However, this image is categorized as a COMPOSITE. The Milky Way was a tad westward, so I realigned it with the tent to create this image. I've always dreamt of getting a shot like this. Close enough tonight; better luck next time!

Another path less traveled, but accessible now that the Merced River has receded. The water is shallow and stagnant, and there is an opportunity to get closer and lower to take a picture of the reflections while the sun shines halfway across those Cathedral Rocks.

I'm starting to enjoy this 12mm fully manual lens. I had doubts about its ability to produce sharp images and my ability to manually focus to consistently get high-quality images - handheld, no tripod. I am now a believer. This lens rocks!

Post-sunrise hike by the Merced River. Whenever I visit Yosemite, I try to walk along the river from the Valley to just past Cathedral Beach. It's the tail end of summer. The river runs low, and the trees are barren, but there are more opportunities to walk through areas that were otherwise impassable because of the river — which also means more opportunities to see views that I'd otherwise miss ... like this one. When somebody tells you the valley is boring and dry around this time of the year, just nod and agree (and start planning your day trip).

The group broke up — two went trail running while @sand_500, and I hiked through the valley. This particular section of the hike is one of my favorites. A quick 360-degree view shows El Capitan, Cathedral Rocks, and Three Brothers (pictured here). It was a cool morning, and the sun was still rising, enough to create shadows in and around the valley. BTW, fall foliage would be beautiful at this viewpoint.

Our unplanned detour in search of real food led us to Lee Vining. The many trips I have made here over the years convinced me to suggest that the group stay and explore the lake (instead of hurrying back to Yosemite). They've never been here, and I genuinely wanted them to have the same experience as I had — which made me want to come back here time and again. The MW core was visible for a couple of hours, and I was fortunate enough to capture it.

Truth be told, I completely forgot to bring my astro gear — prime lenses and my Ha astro-modified camera — except for the Astronomik Ha clip-on filter, which was still in my camera bag. This was the first time I tried to combine tracked RGB images with this filter.

Another beautiful golden-hour sunset at Mono Lake. We need to thank the only restaurant at Tuolumne Meadows for closing a couple of hours early, which meant we had to drive farther to get some real food. An epic accidental detour led us to this hidden gem in Lee Vining - a restaurant tucked by the gas station — the best tuna sandwich and homemade soup, if you are ever around to get it. I've driven here many times and know the quality of food they produce. It even has a small dog park, making it an excellent stopover for many! In any case, I told our group that we are only a stone's throw away from Mono Lake. It's close to 7 pm, and we either visit the place or drive back to Yosemite as planned. I convinced the group to stay so they could experience the lake's uniqueness and beauty. It's also the last week of summer!!!

First attempt at capturing star trails. The conditions were good, so I thought I'd give it a try. What better way to complement this man-made airglow on the horizon with star trails? Two hours later... look at those foreign bodies zipping by. I later learned that this lake was so close to an airport (as seen here, planes streaking by). There were too many of them, so I didn't bother editing them out.

At first glance, it appears as though the Northern Lights are shimmering across the night sky. Yet, despite their mesmerizing display, these lights are entirely man-made. What seems like natural auroras are actually the glow from city lights in the surrounding area (sometimes referred to as "airglow"). This artificial illumination was captured with long-exposure photography.

Yet another place I frequently visit year-round, either to show guests what our amazing coastline has to offer or to chase the Milky Way. This, along with several other sites along HW1, is where I learned to capture the Milky Way when I started years ago. I recall coming here only to be turned away by thick fog (even though the forecast was clear) so many times! It's only now that I realize how lucky I am to go to places like this on a whim and still make it back home... and to work the next day.

The wildfire here has not been suppressed, resulting in parts of Big Sur/HW 1 being closed to the public. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope this ends soon. Be safe, @calfire!
