U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Christopher Barbknecht, assigned to the 122nd Fighter Wing, center, was one of several bystanders who helped rescue a man from a burning vehicle yesterday afternoon following a crash in Roanoke, Indiana.

Barbknecht was on his way home from work when he noticed the car on fire after it was struck by another vehicle near an intersection. He and six other good Samaritans succeeded in pulling the driver to safety moments before the entire vehicle burst into flames. The man was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital.

We are immensely proud of Master Sgt. Barbknecht's courage, selflessness, and commitment to others. He exemplifies the Blacksnake standard we strive for everyday, both in and out of uniform.

25 years later, we look back on a day that shook this nation to its core.

We remember how it felt to be under attack, to feel uncertain.

We remember the hollow dread, watching the news, praying there wouldn't be another plane somewhere.

We remember linking hands with other Americans we didn't even know who felt the same.

We remember the roar of fighter aircraft overhead, scrambled on high alert to secure the skies.

We remember looking for a fight.

We remember. Always Ready, Always There.
