The African American Day Parade has celebrated Black legacy, pride, and joy in Harlem since 1969.

Inspired by Lorraine O’Grady’s Art Is…, A Long Walk Up Seventh brings together five years of portraits made at the parade. Each year, a new artist-designed backdrop has served as a timekeeper for the people of Harlem.

Join me for the project’s final year this Sunday, September 20, from 11 AM–5 PM at 201 West 125th street, with a backdrop envisioned by fellow Harlemite @tschabalalaself

🇵🇷 “I’ve been rapping since I was 12 years old, before the emergence of social media and the team era. I started off rapping in cyphers and battles and by the time I was 14, everybody in Harlem had a team. Growing up, we would all just have fun, get fly, go to house parties, and throw cookouts. Nothing was more fun than being from Harlem. As the years passed, the streets became less about unity and more violent. The community started to separate, and the team era of rapping died out as more gangs were born. These memories are meant to remind people of how much more fun Harlem was for my era, when we were more community-based and united.”

🇺🇸 “This is my godsister’s first birthday. We moved to 152nd St, 8th Ave in 1996. We brought family from Brooklyn, Far Rockaway, and The Bronx to celebrate. In the video is my grandma, Uncle Kev, Uncle Honeyman, Uncle Bubby, Aunt Tammy, Aunt Mary, and cousins from Brooklyn. They all loved coming to Harlem. That day was all about love, family, good food, and good music. Growing up in Harlem during the 90’s was the best. God loves everyone and everywhere, but his favorite place is Harlem.”

Crystal’s birthday party, Morningside Park, 1994.

I feel conflicted writing this tribute. I want to celebrate his music, the legacy, and the profound social impact he offered the Latin community and the world beyond it. Yet, as someone from the very community that nurtured and elevated his talent, I can’t ignore a deep sense of disappointment.

Colón helped soundtrack a cultural awakening. His music helped usher Black and Latino communities out from an era marked by marginalization and toward one centered on pride and visibility. He brought HIV/AIDS into public discussion through his music at a time when silence and stigma prevailed—choosing to honor those affected with rare dignity and compassion.

And yet, in later years, his public stances with political policies many in our communities experience as harmful, feels like a departure from the solidarity his art once stood for.

Perhaps this tension is part of legacy: artists are human, complex, and often contradictory. What remains undeniable is the message in the music—reminding us of who we are and how far we’ve come.

For the risk, the rhythm, and the voice he gave to our stories—I am grateful. May we continue to wrestle honestly with these contradictions while keeping the art itself alive.

Rest in peace 🕊️❤️
