Took me a week to recover from the planning and execution of the Diva, the Belle of Baton Rouge’s 90th birthday celebration but it was a success. Over 100 family, friends, Sorors, church members and former students gathered for an afternoon of love and laughter (and some tears). So happy that she was able to feel the impact she has had and continues to have over so many lives. Beautiful memories and tributes from her favorite and earliest students (6th grade 1963), her linesisters, daughters and granddaughters brought tears to her eyes. And her special birthday greetings from family and friends across the country including a couple of surprises (thanks Sherri and Kamala 🙂) left her speechless. 90 years deserved a special day. I think she got it ♥️♥️♥️♥️ by @14lockett

My first years in NY was full of laughter and adventure rooming with my friend and Soror Deanie Andrews. I am now asking folks to be willing to test to see if they are a match for a kidney donation. Also asking for your prayers that we are able to quickly find a match. If you know Deanie, you know she is larger than life, generous to a fault and a damn good cook lol. She is an amazing mother to her sons. Deanie is Deanie and so deserving of a speedy transplant. Please share!!! by @14lockett

This beautiful lil firecracker turns 90 today. Those 90 years have seen so much change. 40 of those years were spent educating young minds. 61 of those years were spent molding and loving 2 daughters and 2 granddaughters. We are all so blessed to celebrate this milestone with the woman we adore. Happy Birthday Mom!!!! Here’s to many more ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ by @14lockett

I have had some pretty amazing people on my teams that I love and am so proud of. @ashleyebaia was a special one and I was so excited and teary-eyed to see her being acknowledged by Valerie Jarrett during the Obama Presidential Library opening. You could not tell my lil girl self that we were not going to be married as I kept his picture on my wall. I just knew I would meet him one day and did…when he was a guest of the state of California’s penal system. I had just moved to LA and my boss invited me to come to Fresno for a prison visit with Common who did a show there. One of the men on the other side of the fence got my attention and said “excuse me, I just want to thank yall for coming out here. My name is Foster Sylvers and I was in a group”. My eyes widened and went giddy saying “oh I know who you are. You were on my wall!!!!!” He got a kick out of that. RIP my once future husband!! :) by @14lockett

I don’t think that I have fully processed this yet. There was no real bridge between getting the call that she is in the hospital and the call that she is gone. If I had known that our hug at Delta convention was going to be our last I would have held on tighter. Not only my Soror, Carla deepened our friendship chain by bringing me into the Brooklyn Links as my sponsor jokingly calling me her WunandDun. Carla was light and laughter. She knew everyone and was everywhere. She lived her life with gusto and passion. Traveling around the world, doing marathons across the globe, at all the plays and concerts, tennis matches and art openings. She was service and social action personified actively working for Links and Delta Sigma Theta and so many other orgs. I always told her she makes me tired 🙂. I take solace in the fact that although her time on this earth was short, she truly LIVED. She made every moment count. She loved fiercely and lived boldly. Her spirit will stay with us always.
Carla, thank you for being you. Thank you for the laughter, hugs, love, friendship and sisterhood. Rest now in the arms of your beloved Mother. I will hold you in my heart always. Love your WunandDun. by @14lockett
