Home from teaching my last class (paper drafts, lots of office hours ahead…). So glad that my honors advisee Teddy V joined us for part of the class. Once we were done & the last student left, I cleaned off the whiteboard one last time & took it all in. Think it will take a few weeks for my body & heart to realize that the yearly, weekly pace of adrenalized class preps, jumping in the car, racing to class, & then engaging with students has ended. Yet my brain knows. So am in this perplexed state, waiting for body, heart, & brain to be in synch. But another “last” has happened. Will miss this group so much. They really cracked me up this evening. @emoryhistory @emoryphialphatheta @emorycollege @emoryuniversity @laneygradschool @emoryalumni @tval9020 taken in Henry L Bowden Hall by @1789jam

A bit of news: About a week ago I turned in my retirement papers. I have 2 more class sessions to teach. Love my students this semester. The official retirement date is August 31. I have a wonderful honors student to advise next year, a great PhD student who is wrapping up, & probably a few more students to help launch… I am excited about all the research, writing, & travel coming up: Paris, of course, Lucerne, of course, lots of skiing, family, & friends. I have loved my time at Emory, but I’m so excited about the future. Thinking so fondly of the many students and colleagues I have met along the way! Of course, there will be many more hours in archives & a few more pairs of shoes and scarves from Paris! @emoryhistory @emorycollege @emoryalumni @emoryuniversity @emoryphialphatheta by @1789jam

Yesterday was busy and so I neglected to post this. Hard to imagine it has been 33 years. In 1993, 1 of my brothers gave me his bone marrow. He skis (as do other family & friends) & so I take his marrow skiing. Please consider getting on the bone marrow registry. You might be the miracle someone is waiting for. So many new friends along the line & great times w family ❤️. Grateful for these unexpected years & for all that Bob and my family and friends did to help me over the years. Grateful that I have been able to call @altaskiarea my winter happy place.

A few of the friends I saw when I was in Paris. Some of the friendships go back to 1984 & the archives in Rouen. Others to the 1990s & the early 2000s in Atlanta & Paris. That is quite a run. ❤️ by @1789jam

Tuesday, Sept 29 at the Bastille. Peaceful demonstrators met with tear gas and riot gear. The student movement has intensified today (Oct 6). I put a flock of videos from today up in my stories. The students just want an education worthy of the name. by @1789jam

Sept 30, AM: Some students have continued their walkout to protest their conditions. For instance, no AC, yet classes & the Bac exams in June/July in near 100-degree temps. Too few profs. Insufficient funding. Then the way that they were attacked yesterday.

Sept 28, AM: More from the day. The mayor of Saint-Denis arrived at a high school in solidarity w the students this AM. Led them singing the Marseillaise. In some cities, jr high & high school students who were demonstrating in support of more funding for schools were attacked by the police and tear gassed. by @1789jam

History being made in Paris. Tuesday, Sept 29, was the start of the demonstrations & a day of strikes to demand more funding for the public sector—hospitals, firefighters (they are mostly volunteers in France) & especially students, who want better conditions. They were met w riot police & tear gas. I went over to the Bastille as the demonstrators marched past. Got some tear gas (not the first time). In my area, there were many fire fighters who just want to be paid & supported… esp after all the forest fires this summer. #solidarity @sapeurs_pompiers_de_france @guillaume_mazeau @uslsyndicat @emoryhistory by @1789jam

Retirement, yes. But so much research left to do. Do history professors ever really retire? Some great hours in the BNF, the huge (new, well, 1988) library built around a forest that is the size of a football field. You can do research and still get your Garmin steps in. Lol. @labnf @emoryhistory by @1789jam

As I walked home last week thru the Jardin des Plantes, I stopped to see my fav tree in the world, the Japanese Sophora. The seed was sent by a Jesuit missionary in China to Jussieu at the garden in 1747. Jussieu planted it here. Was so happy to see it so healthy. @jardindesplantesdeparis @emoryhistory by @1789jam

A few photos from last week in Lucerne with family. Between the 5 of us, I think we speak 6 languages. This city is beautiful. Every view is a postcard. @luminita.miller.florea @angelica_deutsch_florea @svetlanaflorea.sf by @1789jam

More photos from a busy weekend. This weekend was the “Journées du Patrimoine” when many institutions & companies do special tours. I started w a biodiversity tour of the Luxembourg Garden. The group began w the abri-bus (covered bus stops) that have plants (with large pits of soil underneath) & birdhouses. Then onto pigeon houses, and the vast garden. This garden has been my home base since 1983. I never live far from it. @emoryhistory @lejardinduluxembourg by @1789jam
