If compliments make you exist, criticism will crush you.

Rabbi YY Jacobson used to crave praise and loathe criticism, because praise told him he was lovable. The work is bittul: surrendering the ego and the insecurity again and again. Now there’s only one question that matters. Was what I said right, or was it wrong?

You can explain emotions perfectly and still not feel them.

Rabbi YY Jacobson could lecture on trauma better than most people. Internally, he was shut down. He was operating like AI, brilliant at processing information and articulating it, but missing the one thing AI lacks. You can’t have an intimate relationship with a machine, and you can’t have one with a heart you’ve closed off.

When someone is in pain, our instinct is often to help them see the positive.

“At least you have your health.”
“At least you have your children.”
“At least it could be worse.”

But “at least” doesn’t take away the pain.
It can make someone feel like their pain isn’t valid.

Grief doesn’t always need perspective.
Sometimes it simply needs to be witnessed.

Yes, things could always be worse.
But their pain is still their pain.

Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can offer isn’t a solution or a silver lining.

It’s simply the space to say, “I see what you’re carrying.”

Jonah wasn’t angry that God punishes. He was angry that God forgives.

He spends the whole book raging at the mercy Nineveh doesn’t deserve, while living on the exact same mercy himself: saved from the storm, the fish, sent right back to his mission. That’s the self-deception at the heart of Sefer Yonah. Not Nineveh’s teshuva. His.

God doesn’t argue him out of it, He grows him a gourd, then takes it away, and lets Jonah feel what he couldn’t admit. Some truths you can’t be told. You have to be shown.
