1969 Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming institutional solo exhibition of Emma Steinkraus at the Washington and Lee University Staniar Gallery. FEB 16- MARCH 13, 2026In her work, Emma Steinkraus evokes vivid classical scenes, drawing from Ovid’s Metamorphoses and merging it into the contemporary world. With play and precision her vibrant scenes touch on themes of femininity, transformation, the nude, and the relation of humans with other species. The gallery becomes a pas de deux, a paired dance between the past and the present.Steinkraus’ work is represented by 1969 Gallery in New York City and has recently been exhibited at Carl Freedman Gallery (Margate, United Kingdom), EDJI Gallery (Brussels), WOAW Gallery (Hong Kong), the StadtPalais – Museum for Stuttgart (Stuttgart, Germany) and Hashimoto Contemporary (Los Angeles).Artist’s talk: 5:30 p.m. on March 5 in Wilson Concert Hall in the Lenfest Center for the Arts.Location: Washington and Lee University Staniar Gallery, Lexington, Virginia. He received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI (2022). He is represented by 1969 Gallery in New York, NY, where Deep Down, his first solo exhibition with the gallery, opened in May 2023. He has been included in solo and group exhibitions at Steve Turner, Los Angeles, CA; 1969 Gallery, New York, NY; Eve Leibe Gallery, London, UK; L21 Gallery, Mallorca, Spain; Galerie Droste, Düsseldorf, Germany; and Semiose, Paris, FR. His work was exhibited at the Untitled Art Fair (Miami Beach 2021) and The Armory Show (New York 2025). Dodge’s work has been acquired by Institute of Contemporary Art Miami, Miami, FL. July Guzman (b. 2001) is a Mexican-American painter from Northern California. Guzman attended the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI where he graduated with a BFA in painting (2023). Guzman’s work has been exhibited at NADA Miami (Miami, FL, 2022) and Contemporary Art Now (Ibiza, Spain, 2023) with 1969 Gallery. 1969 Gallery presented Guzman’s first solo exhibition, Along the Line in fall 2024. Guzman also participated in the group exhibition UNTILTED: Painting Perspectives and Interpretations at 1969 Gallery. The Mill Valley Arts Commission and The Marin County Independent Journal featured his successful covid experimental online exhibition, July in May (2020). I always expected a good opportunity to return and exhibit in Romania after more than 17 years living abroad. When @dianamarincu invited me to present 50+ works in a major exhibition at @art.encounters Foundation, I knew this was the right match, yet I couldn't have imagined the amazing reception, support and enthusiasm of the Romanian public towards art. Volver en una pieza: Maria Fragoso JaraOpening January 29 from 4 - 8 pm at PEANA in Mexico CityIn this presentation, garments appear as second skins—protective layers, talismans, and remnants suspended like a body left behind. Evoking serpentine renewal and the regenerative figure of Xipe Tótec, these pieces inhabit the threshold between what is discarded and what emerges. Limbs become visceral markers of interior and exterior, while fragmented forms recall ex-votos and anatomical traditions that understand the body as a site of knowledge, memory, and transformation. Together, these elements compose a landscape where protection, desire, rebirth, and the grotesque intertwine, revealing the body as a terrain in constant transition.María Fragoso Jara (b. 1995, Mexico City) lives and works in New York, NY. She earned a BFA from the Maryland Institute College Art (MICA) in Baltimore. There’s still time to see the final days of UNTILTED: Painting Perspectives and Interpretations before it closes this Saturday. Throughout UNTILTED: Painting Perspectives and Interpretations, the artists use abstraction, surrealism, and personal perspective to challenge the landscape tradition and, in turn, propose a new visual vocabulary to represent the natural and built environments.One artist featured in the show is London-based painter Neil Raitt (b. 1986). In 2013, he received his MA from the Royal College of Art, London. He has shown his work at Anat Ebgi, Los Angeles, CA; Galerie Judin, Berlin, Germany; Nicelle Beauchene, New York, NY; The Cabin, Los Angeles, CA; Chez Valentin, Paris; Choi & Lager, Cologne; The Hole, New York, NY; and Lin & Lin Gallery, Taipei, Taiwan in both solo and group exhibitions. Margaret Thompson works with oils, wax, sand, ash, mica, earth pigments, and plant materials to create abstracted landscapes inspired by the American Southwest. Her work often moves seamlessly between complete abstraction and literal landscapes, sometimes even within the same painting. Am I seeing double? No, I’m looking at Alex McAdoo’s massive diptych Two Cowgill Aves. McAdoo is one of the eleven contemporary painters featured in our year-end group exhibition UNTILTED: Painting Perspectives and Interpretations. Alex McAdoo (b. 1987) currently resides in Los Angeles, CA. What can you say about Wolf Kahn that hasn’t been said before? 1969 Gallery is thrilled to showcase two pastel drawings by Kahn in our year-end group exhibition UNTILTED: Painting Perspectives and Interpretations, open through December 20th.Wolf Kahn was a German-American painter. In 1951, He graduated from the University of Chicago with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He helped to establish the Hansa Gallery, where Kahn had his first solo exhibition. Kahn has received a Fulbright Scholarship, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, and an Award in Art from the Academy of Arts and Letters. Even after his death in 2020, Wolf Kahn continues to be exhibited in galleries and museums across North America.
