A site-specific work created for a community center in São Paulo, Brazil called Sesc Belenzinho, “The Kalunga Machine” is comprised of a grand scale reproduction of a photograph on a 16x21m glass window and a video projected onto the glass floor. 𝗠𝗘𝗘𝗧 𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗦: Aline Motta
We tellen af naar BredaPhoto Festival! Van 11 september t/m 25 oktober ontdek je het werk en de verhalen van meer dan veertig nationale en internationale fotografen en kunstenaars. De komende tijd nemen we je mee langs de makers en de verhalen achter hun werk. 🤍

In ‘Filha natural (Natural Daughter)’ gaat Aline Motta op zoek naar haar betovergrootmoeder Francisca, die als tot slaaf gemaakte vrouw in Brazilië leefde. Door het geweld van de slavernij zijn de levensverhalen van veel tot slaaf gemaakten verloren gegaan. Tot op de dag van vandaag zijn veel Afro-Braziliaanse nakomelingen op zoek naar hun wortels. Met archiefmateriaal, fotografie en film brengt ze vergeten verhalen opnieuw tot leven en laat ze zien hoe generaties nog altijd met elkaar verbonden zijn.

‘Filha natural’ stelt de vraag wat het betekent om te leven in de nasleep van catastrofale gebeurtenissen zoals de slavernij. Tegelijkertijd viert de film het voortbestaan van voorouderlijke culturen, via bloedbanden en gemeenschap, taal en lied, tegen alle verwachtingen in.

In ‘Filha natural (Natural Daughter)’, Aline Motta embarks on a search for her great-great-grandmother Francisca, an enslaved woman who lived on a coffee plantation in Brazil. Due to the violence of slavery, the life stories of many enslaved people have been lost. To this day, many Afro-Brazilian descendants continue to search for their roots. Using archival material, photography, and film, Motta brings forgotten histories back to life, revealing how generations remain connected across time.

‘Filha natural’ asks powerful questions about what it means to live in the aftermath of catastrophic events. Yet it also celebrates the endurance of ancestral cultures, through blood and community, speech and song, against all odds. taken in Breda by @1alinemotta

#Flipelô2026 | Aline Motta (@1alinemotta) é natural do Rio de Janeiro, é artista visual e escritora. Combina diferentes técnicas e práticas artísticas em seu trabalho, como fotografia, vídeo, instalação, performance e colagem. Suas obras reconfiguram memórias, em especial as afro-atlânticas, e constroem novas narrativas que invocam uma ideia não linear do tempo.

Participou de bienais e trienais como a de Sharjah, EAU (2023); São Paulo, Brasil (2023); Coimbra, Portugal (2024); Stellenbosch, África do Sul (2025); Trondheim, Noruega (2025).

Exibiu suas obras no MoMA, New Museum, Pompidou-Metz, Rietberg Museum, MASP, MALBA, Centro Cultural Kirchner (Argentina), Rencontres de la Photographie, Arles (França), Museu Habitat (Barcelona, Espanha), MAR, MAM-Rio.

Seu livro “A água é uma máquina do tempo” (Círculo de Poemas) foi finalista do Prêmio Jabuti 2023.

A poeta baiana Myriam Fraga (1937-2016), que dirigiu a Fundação Casa de Jorge Amado entre 1986 e 2016, será a grande homenageada da Flipelô 2026, ao lado do seu amigo e parceiro, o ilustrador Calasans Neto.

A edição de 2026 possui um significado especial por marcar os 10 anos da #Flipelô e integrar o calendário comemorativo pelos 40 anos da Fundação Casa de Jorge Amado, instituição criada em 1986 e referência nacional na preservação e difusão da literatura e da cultura brasileira.

Abriu em Basel a exposição “Mémoires Voyageuses” na @kunsthausbaselland com curadoria de Ines Goldbach. Participo com a instalação, o filme e fotografias do projeto “Filha Natural”. O filme é exibido numa sala gigante e lindíssima, o sonho de todo artista-cineasta.

#repost This exhibition brings together artists from across the globe whose personal and collective memories are continually on the move—and who make those memories accessible to all of us. Their works encourage us to think and act more openly in the here and now, precisely because they question and unsettle closed forms of thought. What does it mean to carry different memories—and even traumas—within us, experiences that hold personal as well as social significance and that have the potential to transform us when we receive these narratives with care and understanding? In works that are poetic, finely attuned, contemplative, critical, but also expansive, and at times playfully ambiguous, the artists convey a central insight: being human has always meant leaving the familiar behind, reexamining the stories we inherit, and opening ourselves to what is new and unknown. Resolvi fazer esse pôster com frente e verso e estes laminados espetaculares. Muito obrigada #kairacabañas, @igormsimoes e toda equipe da National Gallery. Essays, personal meditations, and images that explore water in all its renewing, destructive, corrosive, and connecting power

Water and its transmutations link the contributions in Art & Water, the second volume in the series Art & from the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art. The series situates the study of art at the intersection of various disciplines—here, they include modernist literature, poetry, film, and both natural and built environments. Essayists use water to address hydrolatry practices in India; ritual objects and practices of enslaved Afro-Surinamers; traces of millstones in the architecture of Seville; and visualizations of sea-level change in the nineteenth-century United States. Their research places art within broader conversations in the humanities considering a water-oriented rather than terrestrial historical framework.

The book is enlivened by first-person narratives that examine deeply embedded meanings of water. Continuing the series’ tradition of exciting book design, an enclosed poster from Brazilian multimedia artist Aline Motta addresses ancestry, memory, and belonging across the Black Atlantic while compellingly conjuring water’s capacity to transform, bring together, and renew. Em uma trilogia de videoinstalações, Aline Motta (@1alinemotta) entrelaça a história do país à de sua vida pra discutir pertencimento e identidade. Na primeira parte, “Pontes sobre abismos”, documentos e retratos de família aparecem submersos em água ou expostos ao vento nas cidades que a artista percorreu em busca de seus antepassados. Na segunda, “Se o mar tivesse varandas”, cria pontes imaginárias entre o Brasil e o continente africano pra evocar registros que, como de seus familiares, foram apagados do que se considera como a “história oficial”.

Na terceira e última parte, “(Outros) Fundamentos”, representada pelas imagens deste post, a artista propõe outras formas de compreender um passado que ainda reverbera no presente. Aline procura restabelecer laços, através das águas e pontes que conectam as cidades do Rio de Janeiro, Cachoeira, na Bahia, e Lagos, na Nigéria, imaginando uma possível comunicação por espelhos, que refletiriam a mesma luz dos dois lados do Atlântico.

Sobre a artista
Aline Motta nasceu em Niterói (RJ) e mora em São Paulo. Em seu trabalho, a artista visual combina fotografia, vídeo, instalação, performance e colagem pra revisitar memórias e construir novas narrativas sobre ancestralidade e identidade. Já expôs no MASP, no MAR e no MoMA, em Nova York. Seu livro, “A água é uma máquina do tempo”, lançado em 2022 pelo Círculo de Poemas, foi finalista do Prêmio Jabuti. by @1alinemotta

Abriu em Zurique na Suíça no @museumrietberg a exposição “A Kind of Paradise - Colonial-Era Photography in Contemporary Art” com curadoria de @nanina_guyer_. Eu participo com minha trilogia de filmes instalada em 6 telas. Há pelo menos 3 anos planejamos esta exposição, é uma alegria estar acompanhada destes artistas maravilhosos. Muito obrigada, @nanina_guyer_ e toda a equipe do museu!

O texto do catálogo sobre meu trabalho foi escrito pela @kenialice. Ela arrasou, como sempre. Com certeza um dos melhores textos que já li sobre meus filmes. Muito obrigada!
