Found this delicate coral fungus on January 28 in Samuel P. Taylor State Park

Ramariopsis sp, growing in tight clusters like a tiny white reef emerging from the forest floor. Always fun to slow down and notice these small forest architectures.

Ready to harvest Cordyceps militaris 👨‍🌾
The bright orange structure is the stroma, covered in tiny bumps called perithecia. These bumps are spore-producing structures that form across the surface of the stroma. Once these develop, it’s a good sign they’re mature and ready to pick.

Pretty good hunt this week. Such a delight to run up on these guys. Morels are probably my favorite mushroom to find, since, at least so far in my experience, they can be tricky to find at times. Still learning from them! Once I find my first of the day, I remind myself to stop, slow down, and look around. You usually find more. 🔮🎉🦔🪻

Swipe to see one slime mold develop 👉

Stemonitopsis typhina — a myxomycete found on decaying wood.

These images show different stages of its life cycle, from newly formed white sporangia to pink, and finally deep red as the spores mature.

    1. Young sporangia
    2. Developing sporangia
    3. Maturing sporangia

Found this cool little bug while looking in decaying logs for fungi

At first I thought the white stuff was some kind of mycelium growing on it, but it’s actually wax that the insect makes itself.

It’s a planthopper nymph, and those fluffy white tufts are waxy filaments used for protection, camouflage, and keeping it clean. Such an amazing thing to see.

Still kind of in shock about this one — found a fully intact abalone shell on the Mendocino coast back in December. Didn’t expect to come across something like this in such perfect condition.

Abalone are marine snails that live along rocky coastlines, and their shells are usually broken up by waves pretty quickly — which makes finding one intact like this pretty rare. Their shells are made of nacre (mother-of-pearl), which is what gives them that iridescent interior.

Most #abalone populations along the California coast have declined significantly over time due to overharvesting, disease, and environmental changes, so coming across one like this felt even more special. by @1balance1
