“Music gave me language for emotions I couldn’t articulate. It taught me about politics and history. It gave me sarcasm and wit. It funneled the world in my ears.”

In a new first-person essay, “How hip-hop is shaping lives in Pittsburgh, from youth to adulthood,” Farooq Ameen Al-Said, director of education at 1Hood Media (@1hoodmedia), reflects on how art has taught him more about himself and the world than any classroom ever has, and how the same holds true for the young people drawn to 1Hood’s programs.

These essays lead into the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council's Policy and Action Roundtable on November 4 at MCG Jazz, a conversation on social prescribing and what it would take to connect people to the arts as part of their care in Southwestern PA.

When I booked a flight to Madrid a few months ago it was simply because it was cheaper to fly there, then to Lisbon for the Non-Profit 501c3 Boot Camp I was able invited to speak at, than directly to Lisbon from the US.

I didn’t realize at the time, that meant I would be in Spain on Indigenous People’s Day, where Columbus Day is like their 4th of July. Not did I know a massive protest for affordable housing would dominate one of their biggest tourist areas Puerta del Sol.

Just having a place to live is a worldwide issue and I saw it first-hand by @1hoodmedia

Kicking off our first year of Kaleidoscope, we’ve had the incredible opportunity to showcase some of the amazing Black Pittsburgh talent that makes our city’s creative community so special! 🖤✨

Now, we’re closing out the year with a powerful finale. Next Friday (10/16), Clara Kent (@IAmClaraKent ) takes the Kaleidoscope stage for an intimate performance that’s sure to be one to remember.

From the first performance to the finale, Kaleidoscope has been about creating space for local Black artists to share their voices, their artistry, and their stories. We can’t wait to end our first year on a high note!
