I haven’t posted here since 2020. Here’s why I’m back.For most of my life I carried something I couldn’t say out loud: I was sexually abused as a boy. It took me decades to name it, and even longer to understand how much it shaped everything after.So my friend Beau Friedlander and I made a podcast with a nonprofit we care and support, Zero Abuse Project and the 1in6 Project. Crying is not a sign of weakness. It’s not a character flaw. It’s a normal human response to a variety of life experiences both joyful and painful. It’s a healthy physical expression of human emotion.When we teach boys that they shouldn’t cry, and when we reinforce this damaging message among men, we deprive half of humanity a basic human reaction to living. When a boy or man has experienced sexual assault or abuse, we also deprive them of a critical, healthy, and entirely appropriate response to trauma.This is unacceptable.Boys and men are allowed to cry.
