Who starts a handmade business in 2026? I must be out of my mind. 😅

That's part of why I'm writing this. I was terrified to start Ms. Kitschy Witch. But in a world full of AI-generated art, there's one thing it still can't replicate: the joy of creating from head to hand.

It started in May 2026. I opened on the Southside, kept my nonprofit job too, and haven't had a day off since — but it's been a joy. Hard work, glorious, affirming, welcoming. All of it, all at once.

When I got the chance to rent the space at 1111, I couldn't believe I'd actually have a store on E. Carson St. It's not quite what it was in the early 2000s, and it took a hard hit from COVID — but it's getting better every day.

For me, it always had that artsy vibe. Most folks go there to drink and party — but I went for the art scene, the poetry, music, misfits who were raw and authentic. I was ridiculously shy back then, but I took in everything.

It's a trove of steel-town roots, culturally mixed, with strong Polish and German immigrant history — grandmas at bingo, pierogies and fine dining a few feet apart. It always just felt like Pittsburgh. No matter who you were, how you dressed, what you were into — you'd be accepted there.

Now I get to reside in this historic building — once a speakeasy, with its own history of tragedy too. And still, the energy here feels good. Maybe that's a little weird, but hey, we'll all be stardust someday anyway. ✨

This adventure has been off the charts. I've met incredible people, gathered some of the most talented folks in Pittsburgh and beyond, with the generous help of incredible friends.

We also run workshops here, and they've become something more than I expected. So many of us don't create enough, don't sit with strangers and just make something with our hands — there's something genuinely therapeutic about it. People walk in guarded and leave a little lighter.

If you haven't been in yet, you really need to visit — handmade magic isn't easy to come by these days. Come see us, because I can't get away from this business. At least not yet. 🖤 #pittsburghartcollectors by @1kitschywitch
