This weekend marks almost a year since I started my live/production journey, and it was such a pleasure and so much fun to wrap up the year by playing at My Aeon for @150bpm.events 😌

Reflecting back and thinking where I am now, there are endless things to improve on and develop - already cannot wait for the next iteration 🤭 Super grateful for the amazing community here in Melbs and for all the fun everyone contributes to and shares, and very special hugs to my friends who are always there to share the joy and to dance tirelessly 🤍

Late last year I started my journey of learning the basics of electronic music production and hardware, inspired by all the talent and creativity I've been exposed to ever since I relocated to Melbourne. It was (and still is) quite overwhelming - I have never opened Ableton before in my life, had no idea about different types of percussion and how to use them, and was completely clueless when it came to putting things together to create a composition.

A few months back I was approached by @soundcheck_naarm for a live performance, and thought I wouldn't be ready - however, I did accept this as a form of personal challenge. I'm glad I did, as preparing for this performance was an invaluable experience on its own 😅 Tip: it never feels like you are ready!

What started with 'ambient' quickly evolved into more of drone/experimental patterns, with the touch of grimness and melancholy, and with extra elements added last minute to drive the energy up as the room fills up and people ease into the evening. I thought it would be easier than hypnotic techno, but I ended up creating something more complex and delicate. I am sure I will revisit it at some point later, looking through the lens of richer experiences, new instruments, and new emotions that I would want to express.

No turning back now - more to come 🌌

Have been working on improvements since the last hardware gig, and I thought that would mean small changes to the mix and mastering, but assigning roles across frequency spectrum and some exploration resulted in totally different compositions.

As a near-beginner, I tend to struggle with implementing musical ideas I come up with. This weekend, I wanted to add a track which I can use at the opening when transitioning from another artist.

The idea was to make it minimalist, grim, with sparse kicks and a strong lead line, so that I could then move to four-on-the-floor kicks at 140 BPM. I got swayed into a completely different direction and wanted to abandon these patterns altogether yesterday. Picked it up today, ended up creating something dubby and kind of calm 🤔

I like this draft of a track, but it's kind of out of place both for my upcoming set and as an addition to the previous experimental-ish one 😶‍🌫️

Sometimes I spend hours and hours exploring in search of the right sound, which I'm not sure what to think of.

There is so much advice online saying something like limiting yourself to an hour to get a groove going or even to finish a complete pattern. Maybe it will come with time and experience, but I'm not really sure. Is there a place for hyper efficiency in the creative process? Where is the boundary between experimentation and wasting time? 🤔

I spent hours today and didn't even get the whole thing finished, but at least I enjoyed it a lot and got something I really like.
