Last week started off horribly. My mom, my most favoritest person, died Monday, August 10, just after midnight. Still processing this and will probably be doing so for quite a while. Very difficult to imagine a world without her in it.
Then Thursday, Chris and I kept our previously made plans for a NYC visit. Exactly the diversion I needed. Thank you to everyone who made the trip amazing long weekend, @zachgrear @mister_stinkles @skotnyc and @luckykid79
Art, French food, Moleskine writing systems, dinner at a classic gay restaurant, seeing my book @bgsqd and getting some new @yohjiyamamotoofficial in an appropriate shade of black for mourning. Coincidentally, when I tried on the black shirt and the other shirt I bought, a Japanese cover of Bette Midler’s The Rose played in the store, which I learned today was the song playing when my mom shuffled off the old mortal coil. Going to try and post more about some of the great books I’ve been reading. Especially when I’ve had the opportunity to meet the author. Came across My Gay Middle Ages at AWP this year and was glad to learn @aw_strouse was going to be there with @punctum_books signing books. St. Sebastian drew me in. When I read it earlier last month, the prose and outright humor kept me hooked. The prose poem format of experiencing medieval literature and philosophy as part of his everyday life makes a fascinating presentation for the biographical aspects of the work. A quick read and very enjoyable, especially if you like Chaucer references and the man, himself. The comparisons of modern day situations and problems with medieval counterparts and solutions made the book for me, yet another commendable approach.

Posting one day late but alas…What an absolutely amazing yesterday! The book fair and after party were both such wonderful experiences! Glad to see this on the big screen. It’s always tricky when a film is made of one’s favorite book, but Monsieur Ozon handles it well. Sumptuous cinematography, amazing acting and a fairly faithful adaptation. I only had one issue overall, a strange choice, but I’ll live. And the added commentary on imperialism and colonialism is much welcomed and spot on. I applaud that choice, the most.
