In the shadow of the recent reports out of Cornell, I keep coming back to something I wrote down before I ever opened this place.

USC has “Forever to Thee.” I thought it would be worth adding one line:

“Forever to Each Other.”

The idea was a toast, but also a pledge: when we go out together, we look out for each other.

A plaque on a wall changes nothing by itself. It does not prevent bad judgment, bad behavior, or tragedy. But maybe a simple visual reminder matters. Something you see on the way in that puts one thought in your head before the night gets away from you:

I’m responsible for myself, but I also have responsibilities to the people around me.

If my friend is vulnerable, I don’t leave them. If my friend is crossing a line, I step in. If somebody I came with has had too much, I make sure they get home.

People are going to go out. They are going to drink, unwind, lose some restraint, and sometimes make decisions with tragic consequences. We are not going to fully eliminate that part of human nature.

What we can do is make looking out for each other part of the culture.

That is all this was ever meant to say.

Forever to Thee.
Forever to Each Other.

I always liked the sound of it. But at the time it felt too sentimental, sincere, corny. I never had the plaque made.

Maybe I should. taken in Elbow Room Five Points by @2020devinest5points

As Mayor of Five Points, I have one promise for this fall:

More life. Less trouble.

Live music will fill the restaurants and venues. Lines will fill the sidewalks. The Five Points village will be alive with students, alumni, football, dancing and nights worth remembering.

We will celebrate harder—but never at someone else’s expense.

Know who you came with. Know how you are getting home. Never drink and drive. Step in when a friend has had too much. Watch each other’s backs, and never leave anyone behind.

There is no place here for violence, harassment or people who mistake belligerence for having a good time. Five Points belongs to everyone who comes here ready to enjoy it without ruining it for someone else.

Come early. Stay late. Support the neighborhood. Take care of your people.

Forever to Thee.
Forever to Each Other.

Lola Grace & The Night

Columbia’s Lola Grace & The Night bring together retro soul, indie rock, and modern funk-pop with a sound that feels rooted in the ’70s without being stuck there. Fronted by Lola Grace and featuring guitarist Julien Kaprino, the group moves easily between intimate songs and full-band arrangements, drawing from soul, rock, folk, country, jazz, and pop.

What stands out is the range: strong vocals, sharp musicianship, and arrangements that give familiar influences a distinct identity of their own.

Lola Grace & The Night perform Wednesday, September 23 at 2020 Devine St in Five Points as part of NEXT WAVE, our weekly Wednesday showcase of local live music.
