Philadelphia plans to renew its incinerator contract with ReWorld. Incineration is an environmental injustice, and people are dying from it. But ending incineration alone won’t solve our waste crisis. The harms of incineration and illegal dumping are connected, and both stem from a broken waste management system. A functional system diverts precious materials for reuse instead of sending them into the waste stream. The long-term solution is preventing waste before it needs disposal. That’s why we support the Stop Trashing Our Air Act and are calling for a robust, modern waste management system that protects our communities. Everyone is invited to meet up with us to audit busy stops in two Northeast neighborhoods!Transit should be accessible and safe for everyone. But too often, SEPTA riders have to deal with broken or obstructed sidewalks, dangerous intersections, a lack of shade, and other obstacles or hazards at our bus stops. As part of a city-wide project, @215peoplesalliance is teaming up with Transit Forward Philadelphia to audit bus stop conditions in the Northeast. We’ll deliver a report to decision makers to build a safer and more equitable transit system.Conducting audits is quick and straightforward. It entails inspecting the stop and the area around it and filling out a simple form. You can also take photos.Get involved by joining us for an audit or by documenting conditions at bus stops on your own. by @215peoplesalliance

We’re tired of it! Tosha Taylor, a block captain on Magnolia Street in Germantown, has been fighting dumping at various corners on her block for years, and recently worked to establish a video network with her neighbors to capture evidence of illegal dumping to share with SWEEP officers and Councilpeople. The Mayor’s Housing Opportunities Made Easy initiative could be a HOME run — or it could have the unintended consequence of creating more illegal dumping of construction debris in our communities. We want to see a policy where any contractor receiving public HOME funding must provide proof that they recycled their construction and demolition waste and didn’t dump it. This is legacy dumping: sites that are cleaned, dumped on, and cleaned up again. “The kids will think that it’s okay to put trash on the corner of every block. It’s just unacceptable,” says Pat Ford of Nicetown. Cayuga & Gratz is a frequently dumped on, and regularly cleaned, legacy dumpsite that’s surrounded by other legacy dumpsites. Without prevention, cleaning is just like playing whack-a-mole — the dumpsites will just keep popping up.
